Influencer Zaira Barrientos: dynamic, entrepreneurial and joyfull.

 

Could you share with us some information of your family life?
I am a 48 years old single mom and I have one other sister and a brother. I was born in the Dominican Republic and when I was 6,5 years old my family migrated and came to live in Curaçao. My grandmother from my fathers side was living in Curaçao and invited our family to come and stay in Curaçao. Without this important decision to migrate and come and live in Curaçao, a decision my mother mostly took, my life would have had a totally different outcome. My father died in 2016 and my mother is still alive and living with me. My mother instilled in us an extra motivation, because migrants didn’t have a good reputation, so as a migrant I worked extra hard just to prove that I can do everything. So my mother instilled in us a mindset that through hard work and perseverance we would make our lives better. The moment I arrived in Curaçao, I went to primary school and immediately started to learn dutch and read a lot of books. After finishing my High School (VWO) I went to Holland for my studies. In the meantime my parents applied to become Dutch citizens and we got a Dutch passport.

 


Could you share something of you educational background and your experiences?
In the primary school level I was always walking with a book in my hand and I read a lot. I was like kind of a bookworm. The idea was that I was able to perform better if I would have a bigger vocabolary. In higschool, my three friends and I decided that we would start talking Dutch with each other as this would help us with our Dutch vocabolary, when we left to Holland for our advanced studies. I wanted to become a Medical Doctor. But when I participated in the system to earn a slot to study medicines, I wasn’t drawn in the early first two tries I made. So I had to follow my Plan B. I was good in sports and loved doing sports. Since I was 9 years old till I was 15 years old, I participated in volleybal, softbal, gymnastics and competitive swimming. So when I wasn’t drawn to study Medicines in my first two years in Holland, I applied for a slot to study at the Sport Academy. To be allowed, I had to make a film of my own sports performance, which was very amateuristic, but anyway I was allowed to start my studies at the Sports Academy. After these first two years I finally was drawn and allowed to start with studying Medicine. As I was studying Medicine, I got in contact with scientific research. I asked for a small grant of a Pharmaceutical Company and ended up during 5 years getting projects funded by the EU and Pharmaceutical Companies and I gained a lot of experiences in asking subsidy and in scientific research. But in my Medicine Study I had some delays, which I later made up. But the experiences with scientific research during 5 years that I was part of an international team studying a rare metabolic disorder, collecting the scarce information that was by then available and also information on medicines on one of these diseases that were patient related, was priceless. In Medicines I didn’t choose the clinical option of the study and before coming back to Curaçao in 2006, I also studied management. After 2006 I did some small upgrades, like becoming an export coach of the Ministry of Economic Development and the most important upgrade was a certification for the training: Mental Health first Aid, for adults and youth. As a red line through my whole career there has always been project management. I do what I like to do and I love what I am doing now. In all the things that I have done, adult re-education is the one I love the most.

 

You are an entrepreneur and driver of mental health first aid in Curaçao and for so far we know you were the first to have been able to collect funds for a major project from the Netherlands for projects in Curaçao, can you elaborate on the goals and impact you hope to achieve with this project?
Yes this has been a breakthrough indeed. I am the first one offering this training of Mental Health First Aid. I love doing these workshops. The first day people come in rather sceptical. And after the first day of the workshop they are like “WOW?” Most are waiting quite some time for something in this area and this comes up and they experience it as a great thing to do. If I would have tried to explain upfront what it would all be about, most would have reacted rather sceptical a long the lines of “What is this?”.

The treshold is low, and the impcat is substantial. Everyone is able to participate whether you are highly educated or if you have no medical background, we have made it accessible. The main goal of Mental Health First Aid is to help someone whom is developing a mental problem. It is also breaking the taboo’s related to mental health problems and it breaks with stigmas.

It was indeed a breakthrough project opening up the opportunities for more projects. By now, 5 projects heve been subsidized in 2 years, which also gave oportunity to the training to almost 800 people on Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire in total. Being able to deliver projects with good results, we notice that we have better conversations with donors, they are becoming more and more enthusiastic towards new initiatives. We have broken the ice and we are in awe of this.

 

 


What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
My daugther also asks me this question often about herself. Why was I born and whom am I ..etc...I am telling her go and study Philosophy, ha,ha,ha...

For me it is simple, if you want to achieve something, you have to start with yourself first. I am a person of great Faith. And as a Believer I believe that everything will end up ok. I take small steps, even if it is only one person that I can reach at the time, that is the approach, start small and then the spin-off can spread. The power behind this approach is that you can prove to someone that they can change, that it is possible. I love One-on-One’s. I have done some change management projects in different companies. In that setting you also have a lot of people that don’t want to change. But in One-on-One you enable them to make a choice themselves to change. It also makes you conscious of the fact that if they chose to change or not that doesn’t has to frustrate you. If you start small and the person changes that gives you a lot of energy. In that sense I am a coach, I am not a consultant telling people what they should do. It is up to them when you coach, if they chose to change. So my BIG WHY is to enable people to change if they chose to.

What are the challenges that you are dealing with?
The culture can be paralysing because you hit this huge cultural wall and either you accept it or fight it. You can blame people and keep asking them: “Why do you think in limitations? Why do you have to see the impossibilities first”

Or you do what I try to do and that is trying not to be judgemental. This is my biggest challenge, to not judge!. I was raised with the mindset that by working hard, tomorrow will be better than today.

The challenge is to rid myself of my judgements, put it aside. I do this every time I am in a training. I am correcting myself continously, that I shouldn’t think like that. I should see other people having their own different references.

 


And how are you dealing with these different challenges you confront?
I am continously correcting myself, when I become aware that I am being judgemental and that I shouldn’t think like that.

Do you use your inner voice to evaluate when dilemma’s show up? How does that work for you?
I am a quick in taking decisions. I am also very good in visualizations of the future I want to manifest, even if the siutation right now is very chaotic, I am able to do that and come up with new perspectives in my visualizations. But to solve a dilemma, I will have different dialogues within myself and I am giving myself feedback from different perspectives. It is kind of a mental preparation before going into a real conversation with someone about the dilemma. Through repetition I teach myself things, an example is the one I mention before as my biggest challenge “not being judgemental”.

My inner compass when it comes to people cpild be better, as I not always select the right persons around me, but then I have noticed that if people don’t fit in my direct environment they often leave by themselves. They don’t stay long, as I see it, it is kind of God’s protection of me. So it corrects itself soon afterwards.

 


How are you trying also to keep up with your personal knowledge and skills levels?
I have developed and kept for long the habit to read scientific articles. The past 5 years this has become less, now I am more into webinars, on-line workshops, TED talks. I do this a lot. These days I am reading less scientific articles. Basically I still read a lot and my eyes are at times weary from all that reading. I nowadays even need reading glasses.

What are your strengths?
I am very good in project management and planning so that we don’t get stressed because of lack of planning, I am good at organizing events. I am not good in my administrative task, there I have a back log. I have a very good helicopter view and this frustrates my daugther and employees at times. I also have a lot of compassion for other people and I can feel sorry for other people and try to see how I can be of help. At times this is misused.

I am quick to give people things or to help someone out. My mother is the same. I am a very generous person. If I want to surprise a person I could bring them a cup of soup. It makes them and myself very happy.

 

Do you have hobbies?
I still love reading although my time is hard pressed these days. I do less sports, because of a hip injury, but I still love swimming. I wake up at 5 am and make myself a cup of dominican coffee and just sit in silence and enjoy how the birds wake up. I love good food.

 

How would you describe Zaira in one word or one sentence?
Dynamic, entepreneurial and joyfull.

 

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your live?
My mother and also an aunt of me that is always into making fun in the things life offers, this has helped me a lot. Furthermore some youth leaders from the very dynamic church that I am associated to. They have inspired me so much that I also strive to be meaningful for others.

 

What is a trait that is still work in progress?
Patience with employees and patience in general. I train myself often in this, but then I still loose it at times. Listening without being judgemental, not even thinking just listening, that is what I am trying to improve. 


 

What was a defining moment in your life?
Choosing when I was a student in Medicines for the scientific research world. Choosing not for the clinical side of Medicines, this combination of having a medical background, having management experiences and project management skills is a rare combination. This is my unique selling point. This has opened a path that has become my personal journey.

 

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years from now?
That I will be seen as a good friend in all senses of the word, trustworthy with compassion, easy to deal with in the fun and the not so fun things that happen in life. When they look back they will say that I am a good friend.

 

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao as we are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, recession and in the middle of growing environmental challenges because of the global warming consquences?
If there are enough people with small grass roots initiatives and they perservere and synergyze with one another, this could grow out to become a movement. This according to me is the only way to have impact and to maintain hope.


Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Every day to wake up and take notice of some things that you are thankful for. If that is the case, then there is hope, than whatever you strive for must succeed and nothing is impossible.

One of the 250 Influencers of Curaçao
Zaira Barrientos, is a passionate, dynamic, driven, entrepreneurial, fun-loving person that is committed to “having impact”. Her upbringing from her parents and her background as a migrant - at the age of 6,5 years, she moved with her parents from Santo Domingo to Curaçao – has taught her the importance to “adapt”. This gave her a chip on her shoulder to work extra hard to be successful in life and her career. Reading a lot since her primary school days and working hard has brought her to Holland where, when she was studying Medicines, she got acquainted with scientific research. Having a non-clinical medical background combined with management, change management, business coaching and project management experiences, has helped her to offer a rare combination of skills that makes her unique.

Over the past 5 years Zaira has increasing been able to identify local and funds from outside of Curaçao and she has implemented projects that delivered the promised outcomes. Her Mental Health First Aid that with foreign funds was offered to civil servants in government in Curaçao was the first in its kind and in that sense, she is doing ground breaking work. The participants have enjoyed the content, which was accessible and it helped break taboo’s related to mental health problems. Working in Curaçao in a culture that can easily be paralysing, because of its tendency to think in limitations, she is taking small steps preferably in One-on-One settings and striving to rid herself from judgements. With this approach and her drive we are convinced that by staying her course, her impact will even grow bigger and bigger. That is why we dearly love and deeply respect Zaira and consider her part of the 250 Influencers of the island representing the Business and Educational sector.

 

The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020
The goal of the Share2Uplift movement is to: “Identify 250 leaders from all walks of life to connect, align and create impactful changes in all walks of life, which includes intergenerational collaboration by the end of 2021.” We will use interviewing Influencers, meet-and-greet events, “train-the-trainers”-programs on “Emotional Mastery” and “Intentionality “as national intervention strategies, to reach this goal on top of our goal to scale up the possibilities to connect, align and create impact via a virtual platform. We believe that with collaborating with Miguel Goede on the virtual Vision 2030 platform, we will accelerate the possibilities to connect the diaspora and others elsewhere in the world and on the island willing to constructively create impactful changes in Curaçao, to join. Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.

 

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:

– Create an inspiring vision of the future;

– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;

– Manage delivery of the vision;

– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

These criteria are now being polished.

Golden Village, a spiritual platform to connect, align and create impactfull changes

Natalie Daal and Haydee Hermans, as Influencers, dear friends and colleagues we have already interviewed both you in the past. Last week we interviewed Phyllis van den Hout, the 3rd person part of Golden Village initiative. Let us start with you Natalie (founder of Golden Village), we have interviewed you in June 2018 and July 2019. Can you tell us what you are doing of late and also share with us as you are the founder of Golden Village something more of this initiative?
The last time you interviewed me, I shared that I was pondering a new direction, a new venture in my life’s journey. I was planning to move away from the day-to-day tasks at “Klimop”, the afterschool educational institution I started and move on to a more executive, supervisory task. In 2019 I hired someone that I am now coaching to manage “Klimop”. I am still underway to free myself completely from the day-to-day tasks of “Klimop”, but that also has opened up time and space to discover my new direction in my life’s journey. And I have found it.

I have had this “urge” for some time now that I needed to change the course in the type of work that I do. And as my passion is spirituality and I had this “drive” originating deep from my heart, to do this work. As I was pondering, we got the COVID pandemic in March/April 2020 that had so many consequences for us. We were running two locations at the same time and from April till July, we hardly had any children attending our schools, meaning we hardly had any income. This while we still had to pay our fixed costs for the locations that we were using.

 

What is this epiphany exactly, this BIG-AHA-moment?
Because of my habit to continue to do my personal spiritual work, I got this epiphany, to try out a spiritual center at this venue. One of the venue I was renting was adequate for this purpose and because of all the work I do spiritually, I got nudged into this and I decided to just try it out.

Because of the economic consequences of the pandemic, there are so many light workers in the same situation more or less as I am. They have less income while they still have their fixed costs for the lease of the locations that they need to do their work. So we started with this concept to offer a joint location where light workers can rent a part or certain hours of our location for less costs. We named it “Golden Village” and it is based on a cost-sharing concept like electricity, water, the internet, telephone etc....where we share space at our venue for all those that want to offer coaching, massage, healing sessions, workshops, we also have a Physician and what have you more in the spiritual sphere and this is offered at affordable costs. This of course also makes the whole venue more affordable for me.

 

What is the concept all about?
We offer first and foremost a location that they can rent partially. The venue was too big for me to make full use of it. And these days it is a challenge to rent a place all by yourself to offer massage, yoga, ..etc..so I thought “Why not join forces and by doing that making it possible for all involved to rent a space for only certain time slots for a meeting or space partially for massages or coaching sessions for children and their parents, workshops, coaching, yoga, meditation, massage, basically all areas related to spirituality”.

By doing just that, this is a win-win and it becomes affordable for all of us. Coincidentally Phyllis was starting with her P#MP, so we joint forces and after that I involved Haydee. Haydee and myself were offering business coaching services to entrepreneurs and I know Haydee for quite some time now, but of late both of us are so synchronized with one another and she also decided to join forces at Golden Village. So basically we are offering space for rent to people in need of space for their spiritual and personal development activities. But Golden Village is also a village where providers of different spiritual services, light workers are brought together for healing purposes based on a holistic approach. Comparable to the saying: “It takes a village to educate a child”, in Golden Village we say: “It takes a village to heal people, be it either children or adults, but mostly adults”. In this we don’t exclusively offer these services to locals, but we also want to offer this to people from abroad as an tourist attraction for those that are looking for healing. We are actively making an inventarization of all those involved. This because we want to offer in a special link on our website spiritual services, all the contact-info and necessary information for seekers that are interested and looking for healing-services.

What kind of activities do you organize at Golden Village?
On the first Monday of the month some of us, women, will come together and have discussions on spiritual subject matters. Furthermore in the beginning of March we will have our first big event called “Feminine Quest”. We will start on the 5th of March we will have the opening with a key note speaker, followed by workshops on the 6th (a Saturday) and the 7th of March (a Sunday), that will be facilitated by different facilitators. On March the 8th we will celebrate the International Women’s day.

Great initiative, basically you are connecting dots, aligning efforts and creating impactful changes, right?
That is exactly what we want to accomplish. By joining forces we can have a even greater impact on the collective consciousness.

Haydee we interviewed you way back in December 2017. Haydee can you tell us what you have been doing since December 2017 and tell us some more about “Emoshon kiko e ta? Ki efekto e tin?”.
Well, I’ve went through so many changes, that I don’t even recall the kind the person that I used to be. But anyway I decided to join the Share2Uplift movement after I left my job at a local bank. It was May 2016 and I started Soul Garden Curacao. I was always driven to help other people and I was always looking to be in nature, so I started helping people as I worked from my garden at my home. I became a John Maxwell certified coach since 2012 and started discussing self help books and books of John Maxwell in Master Mind groups. With a friend, Sherlyne Eisden, I started presenting books at Mensing’s Caminada and at first started with paper in our hands, then we migrated to powerpoints presentations. We started with only a few people and later the numbers of people increased. I have done this for over 3 years and later got Ivan Kuster involved as a presenter. Later with Ivan we offered workshops together and in the meantime I started renting Soul Garden as a venue where people offered different types of activities, including once and while “high tea” events. I studied Temple Index of Functional Fluency (T.I.F.F.) where one learns how to measure the effectiveness of a person’s behavior, but most of all I went through a big personal transformation as I was involved in so many different things, like book presentations, workshops, individual One-on-One coachingsessions with different coaches as a coachee and while going through this journey, I released the old beliefs, emotions and behaviors that became less useful for me.

How did you got involved with focusing on “emotions”?
I have been presenting workshops at Mensing's caminda and during one of these workshop, where I was presenting the book titled “Dodging the Energy Vampires” there was a full house and we, Ivan and I, became aware that we were discussing the problems and not addressing the solutions. There this idea originated to offer a “tailor made experiential personal journey on the emotions” for every individual attendee. By the end of 2018 and the beginning of 201, O’dennis Daal, Ivan Kuster and myself, decided to team up and there is where “Emoshon kiko eta? Ki efekto e tin?” started.
In this journey for the attendees of the Personal Journey’s we focus on the mastery of their emotions, their intentionality, their energy and their intuition. We launched it on the 5th October 2019.

In 2016 I also rolled out “Sister Power Foundation” together with 3 other ladies. We started with 10 people at our first event in January 2017, from that moment on, we gradually have grown. Organizing activities every third week of the month for women only, charging Ang 10,- per person. There were times the attendance was almost 80 people, as we were always able to present an interesting speaker. Later we scaled the maximum number of attendees down to 50, due to the logistics to make the essence accessible for all attendees.

 

My transformation was also fueled by reading hundreds of books, attending numerous workshops and seminars locally and abroad. Implementing, what I learned and putting into practice was the key to my transformation. This made me change my perspective on life, especially the books addressing emotions. In 2020 as part of my own personal journey with a never ending curiosity, I started a yearlong training presented by Ilse Daal called “Emotie in beweging” that will end in February 2021. At first I thought I was reasonably clear and clean in terms of my energy and emotions. But during the training, I became aware of different trauma’s and pains that I still had, that were hiding somewhere in my subconscious mind. By going through this training I was able to clear some these emotions. Furthermore, as a trainer of the Personal Journey’s (we are facilitating the 7th group that vary between 3 to max 5 attendees), I also learned a lot. Lots of people are un aware of the relationship that exists between emotions and spirituality. I have learned to apply what we were teaching in my own life, especially with regards to my emotions and my spirituality. And this makes me feel very confident.

 

Seeing people transform from a person that does not know themselves so much to a more joyful, peaceful, whole and confident person and more aware of their purpose and the meaning of life is the reason I do it all. Such a fulfilling feeling to take people on this journey.

 


Haydee can you also tell us why you joined Golden Village?
I am a strong believer in spirituality and I got this urge or call with the message that those involved in spirituality needed to join together, so that jointly we can leverage a bigger change. With this in mind I decided to join Natalie and Phyllis. There is also another reason, Soul Garden this year is turning 5 years old and since January 2020, I felt like I needed to move Soul Garden away from my home. So Natalie’s Golden Village initiative came at exactly the right moment and I decided to move certain activities to Golden Village and gradually step by step started to stop working from my home and moving to an office away from my home.

This happened in October 2020. The idea is that Golden Village becomes a spiritual community where people can re-discover what they have inside themselves. It is like this metaphor, in Thailand where the Buddha was cemented and the cement broke off and the Gold beneath it became apparent. This is a great metaphor for what we want to achieve, remove the programming and the cover life has put on people and let their gold that is beneath it all to come to the surface. Golden Village consisted and still consists of a string of synchronicities between Natalie and myself. She would dream about something and I would see the design. This all took place with such a speed that in December 2020 when we decided to start with activities, we saw three “wara-wara’s” (these are the local version of “Eagles”, and as you know Eagles fly high) landed in the middle of the garden where we were having a meeting at that moment in Gaito. For us it was a sign that we needed to fly higher, as the higher we can soar, the more people we are able to help. This was the helicopter view that we will need to accomplish Golden Village. At last the things are all falling into place, my personal experience, knowledge and skills that are gradually becoming so much clearer to me.

 


What is it then that you have to do?
Bring all knowledge and experience gathered in the field of self-development, spiritual growth and healing together and be the transmutor, the catalyst and the helping hand for all to learn that joy, peace, love, growth and contribution, is what we all strive for. With this intention I provide tools, coaching, mentoring and healing through workshops and one on one sessions. Being the catalyst I also provide the next step people can take by referring to the customers to other healers or sessions. Being a connector I will be one of the magnets to bring all the practitioners in the holistic field to Golden Village so we all can help the customers in our own field of strengths and gifts. Especially now that I feel the urge that together we can do much more since it is not only one session with one person that does the miracle but it is a combination of various sessions that helps the customer to live their highest version and more joyful life.

 

What are you offering in the Golden Village?
I offer one on one coaching on emotions, energy, intention and intuition. Furthermore, I do mentor on Marketing from your Soul. Further I recruit renters for the Village so that they can offer their services. In March Ednellla will start to give messages at Golden Village once a week. And we hope to have at least 10 people renting Golden Village on a monthly basis to offer their services, since the 3 of us are very much aware that we can’t offer it all by ourselves.

 

On the long term the intention is to attract all the different spiritual areas. You name it, massages, coaching sessions for children and their parents, workshops, coaching, yoga, meditation, massage, Qigong, Mirror work, basically all areas related to spirituality. As there are different areas, rooms in the Village, all those involved can rent a room or time slot, which includes the outdoors to offer their services. The intention is, to eventually create a Golden Village community, so that Light workers, spiritual Warriors, Coaches, Seekers can join together and by doing this generate a greater force to create positive changes on the island.

 

The goal is to offer a spiritual platform where spiritual people can connect align and create a bigger impact on the collective consciousness on the island and therefore for the whole world.

 

 

Natalie, Phyllis and I form the right combination because each of us play our own role in the triangle we form. Natalie holding the helicopter view, being the manager of it all, bringing her spiritual experience, knowledge and connections to the table, Phyllis being a do-er keeps us on track and awake to the mission, goals and purpose we are going for, and I am the idea generator, the creator, the connector, the marketer and the one bringing my own experience of spiritual growth and my network gathered over the years to the one stop spiritual center of Curaçao.

 

 

One of the ideas we came up with is to start with the sessions twice a month called: “Spiritual Warrior Awareness”-program and we are now also “Feminine Quest” week-end, where women can connect, celebrate and gain knowledge of themselves as women, their femininity and trigger their so-called “Inner Goddess” within them.

 

 

Except for the Feminine Quest all other activities are for both man and woman because we believe that it is very important to engage man in spiritual growth also.

 


Can you tell us some more of this “womens”-weekend in March?
On the 5, 6, 7 and 8th of March we are organizing a “Feminine Quest” with some 8 speakers as Natalie pointed out. With my background as a marketing expert, I will have the task to market this event.


Can you give us the names of some of those speakers, faciliators during these days?
We will have Rudolf de Wit, Reina Joe, Dionne Christian, Gretna Provence, Elianne de Haseth to name a few.

Influencers of Curaçao collaborating
Golden Village is a platform that consists of enthusiastic, energetic and dedicated spiritual light workers, that decided to collaborate for the greater good. The initiative that is far bigger then the venue that they offer as they say that: “It takes a village to educate a child”, in Golden Village live by the saying that: “It takes a village to heal people, be it either children or adults, but mostly adults”.

By working together in at times wonderous ways and synchronistically, they are now manifesting their goal which is: “To offer a spiritual plaform where spiritual people can connect align and create a bigger impact on the collective consciousness on the island and therefore for the whole world”. For their collaborative attitude and for the impact they are aiming to enable, we dearly love and deeply respect Natalie Daal (founder), Haydee Hermans and Phyllis van den Hout all “Influencers” that we interviewed individually as Influencers and we consider them part of the 250 Influencers of the island representing the spiritual and business sector.


 

 

The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020
The goal of the Share2Uplift movement is to: “Identify 250 leaders from all walks of life to connect, align and create impactful changes in all walks of life, which includes intergenerational collaboration by the end of 2021.” We will use interviewing Influencers, meet-and-greet events, “train-the-trainers”-programs on “Emotional Mastery” and “Intentionality “as national intervention strategies, to reach this goal on top of our goal to scale up the possibilities to connect, align and create impact via a virtual platform. We believe that with collaborating with Miguel Goede on the virtual Vision 2030 platform, we will accelerate the possibilities to connect the diaspora and others elsewhere in the world and on the island willing to constructively create impactful changes in Curaçao, to join. Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.

 

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:

– Create an inspiring vision of the future;

– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;

– Manage delivery of the vision;

– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

Phyllis van den Hout: bold, couregeous and witty  

 

Could you share with us some information of your family life?
I was born and raised in Curaçao, with a father from Curaçao and a Dutch mother. I have one older brother. Like most families, we have had some turbulent times growing up, but I must say that because of these experiences, I feel that I am now a stronger, more resilient and better person. Although my parents are not actively involved in what I am doing now they have provided me (consciously or unconsciously) with the right set of values to navigate in this life. And of course I have picked up some of my own too along the way. I am the mother of two beautiful souls, who besides making me crazy, are also making me a better person every step of the way.


Could you share something of you eductional background and your experiences? You are lawyer and Life Consultant?
I went to Amsterdam when I was 17 years old to study English Language and Literature, and I have lived and worked there for 8 years, after which I came back and worked for six years as the deputy manager of CIFA, which is the association representing the international financial services sector in Curaçao. At the same time I was studying Law, which I finished in three years and then I started to work as a lawyer in 2010. In 2017 I started my own law practice and even then I felt I was missing something. My motivation to study law was to help others. However, I have always felt and feel more and more that the legal issue is but a small piece of the “problem’, which cannot be solved from the legal perspective only. So I was misisng something. And since I always was interested in the human and the emotional side of the story, I got certified as a mediator for conflict resolution outside of court, and in 2020 I started working as a transformational life coach as well.

 

You are an entrepreneur and what kind of services do you offer?
I am not your traditional lawyer! And although I still offer traditional legal services, where I specialize on employment matters, that is now becoming a minor part of my focus. Besides the legal aspect, I offer mediation sessions and workshops, I work closely with people (in groups or 1-on-1 coaching sessions) to achieve massive mind shifts, which result in massive positive changes in every area of their lives. However, at this point I am in the process of transitioning myself and my business to cater to high achievers and business icons to reach the next level in their success. This enables me to combine my talents and leverage my zone of genius in order to offer my clients that which will have the most powerful results for them.

You are now involved in a venture to launch Golden Village. Why did you team up with Natalie Daal and Haydee Hermans?
I believe in collaboration. I believe a human being is one integral entity. The segmentation we experience now, of work on the one hand and private life on the other; the body on the one hand and spiritual and mental aspects on the other, is something made up by people. And we are not benefitting from that segmentation. Everything is intertwined and connected and we should take care of ourselves that way. Since I myself have always been very much interested in my own development as a human being, I have been walking around for a few years with the idea od starting a centre in which every aspect would be catered to.This idea crystalized when I met Natalie. I can’t explain what exactly happened, but since I have been trusting more and more on my intuition, and I just took a leap of faith and started this venture with her. And while Golden Village is developing, we ourselves are evolving at the same time.

Everything is intertwined and connected, since I myself am very much interested in my own development as a human being in all areas I have been walking around with the idea od starting a centre in which every area was being catered so I was doing the labor part helping people find their way in employement matters as an employees or owner whatever and I was doing meditations at the time doing practicing spiritual development etc...etc...so then this idea was crystalized when I met Natalie, I can’t epxlain what exactly happened but I started to trust more and more on my intuition and I just took a leap of faith and started this venture. I see that as Golden Village is developing we ourselves are evolving ourselves with the village.

What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
I think all and all in the past, of course the experiences we have in our lives lead up to something, they lead up to one Big Bang, if we let it flow We all have a mission on this earth, something we came to accomplish before we leave. I am convinced that by finding out what that mission is and by actually living out that mission, we become whole individually as human beings, or rather spiritual beings. Only by becoming whole individually, we can become whole collectively. So we need to take that step for ourselves first. We need to allow ourselves to be authentic and break free from all the rules, the traditions and all the regulations that have been set up for us, consciously or unconsciously, out of fear or illwill or whatever it is, and stop playing small and step into our power. By helping others finding and achieving their mission in my own unique way, I accomplish my own mission in the process.

 

What are the challenges that you are dealing with? And how are you dealing with these different challenges you confront?
I am at the point of my life that I am looking at the different segments of my existence and everything I am doing as an expression of me (the lawyer, the life coach, P#MP, Golden Village, the mother, the friend, etc), taking all that and re-inventing myself into one powerful being through which I can support others even better. When a person starts living in his power and allowing himself to be truly authentic, the people that are the closest to them do not always understand. You are changing, evolving, rocking the boat and people don’t like that. You are stepping out of your comfort zone and now, for the first time, you feel that you are alone in your journey to reach your potential. This is what I am experiencing and those are my challenges. Most of all, I am confronting myself now, for the first time with all limiting thoughts that I have been holding for all these years. My biggest challenge now is to be completely honest with myself and break with those beliefs that have been holding me back until now.

 


How are you dealing with thise challenges?
By spending time with myself, getting to know my true self, to really listen to myself and what it is that I need at any moment. I luckily have like-minded people around me, whom I can brainstorm with and who challenge me to grow. I look for these people, I welcome them in my live. Furthermore, I meditate, spend quality time with my kids, spend time in nature and really make it a point to enjoy life. After all, it is all about staying on that high vibration, that frequency where everything is manifested.


Do you use your inner voice to evaluate when dilemma’s show up? How does that work for you?
When I look back at my life, I can say that I have always unconsciously trusted and worked with my intuition. I welcome the answers I receive from the Universe. I have always depended on my intuition and now I am doing it on a much more conscious level. I am an impulsive person and I work with my gut feeling. I know that I am on the right path or taking the right decision (like starting with Golden Village), when I get cold feet but at the same I feel electricity, that deep excitement. I then know “this is it” regardless of the feeling of fear that arises when I step out of my comfort zone. That is when I take that leap of faith.


How are you trying also to keep up with your personal knowledge and skills levels?

There is not one moment in my life during which I am not busy working on some program or course. I am always looking out for further development of my skills by doing workshops, following courses online or embarking on a new venture. Now, with more and more possibilities online, I feel like a kid in a candy store! There’s always something to do and I am always looking out for the next level: a bigger, better, bolder action.

Where you did you get this curiosity?
It is this basic urge: the need to grow, to expand, to keep expanding, to not stand still. I have the innate urge to live this life fully and completely. Since we don’t know how much time we have been given, I take any moment to move, evolve and grow.


What are your strengths?
I’m bold. I say what needs to be said, even if I am the only one saying it out loud, while others only think it. I honestly care about people and I am interested in their journey. I think it is a good combination because I dare to ask the questions to get to the bottom of things and support others to get insight in themselves, even if it might hurt. I refer to this combination as “tough love”. In my connections with other, I believe in honesty and openness in the interest of growth. If we are always telling each other that we are right, not telling each other what we did wrong or where we could have done better, we are not being challenged, we are not learning and thus not growing. So I cherish friends who can be a mirror to me and who can tell me where I can change and what was my part in any situation. One book that depicts this beautifully is the “Spiritual Partnership” by Gary Zukav.

 

Do you have hobbies?
My hobbies are growing, studying, reading, playing with the kids, going to the beach, having fun and doing crazy stuff. Forging deep connections with people over dinner while having a good conversation...that is my definition of an ideal evening.

How would you describe Phyllis in one word or one sentence?
Bold, couregeous and witty.

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
Anyone who steps out of their comfort zone and creates massive extraordinary results for themselves against all odds, by being their authentic selves. These, to me, are the most inspiring people.

What is a trait that is still work in progress?
Dare to be vulnerable, by being honestly and brutally me.


What was a defining moment in your life?

My father’s death last year. I realized that his presence and what we have been through together over the years, has had a big impact in my life. I now need to incorporate this experience into that which makes me what I am today in order for me to be of even better service to others.


What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years from now?

That I stepped up and I overcame my fears.

 

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao as we are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, recession and in the middle of growing environmental challenges because of the global warming consquences?
I believe that this is a vital time for people to be creative, to reinvent themselves, to leave behind everything that is not helpful anymore, to start gathering all the things that give you power and give you life. It is a perfect time for people to start to reflect, regroup and come back even stronger.

 

Tell us something about PEM?
P#MP (pronounce PEMP) is a movement that inspires people to break with limiting believes, to stop being a victim and live their power. The content of the different projects is based on the coaching programs I offer. Since working with my coaching clients, I have seen so many great results that I wanted it to have a bigger impact, to make it accessible and have a greater impact.

One of the 250 Influencers of Curaçao

Phyllis van den Hout is an energetic, curious, fun loving, dedicated lifelong learner aimed at wanting to get the best out her life. Multi-facetted as she is, in terms of her study background and career path, her deep interest in the humanity of her clients especially their emotions, nudge her in her journey to focus of late more on One-on-One Transformational Coaching and offering of Transformational workshops enabling her clients to become whole. While being able to be brutally honest at the one hand and while at the same time caring deeply for her clients, she helps her clients to get a deeper understanding of their lives. This she is doing without excluding her legal background as an attorney, her focus on employment matters and her mediator background, leading her to bundling of the services she offers to serve the transformation of her clients even better. Her success with her coaching services and her urge to also be a social responsible entrepreneur, led her to form PEM. A program where she offers the same services to those unable to pay for these services. Online meeting on Impactful collaboration, MYM book presentation, Register for Personal Journey on Emotion, this week tips

In this week’s blog (18th of January – 24th of January) we start inviting all those who we have interviewed as influencers and anybody else to give us some suggestions on how to enable and trigger more collaborations to have impactful changes in all walks of life in Curaçao. We are announcing a Zoom event on the 23rd of March were we will discuss these suggestions and also invite all to take notice of Vision Curaçao 2030 and contribute in whatever way to this vision for Curaçao; we will invite you to our next Master Your Mind joint book presentation on the 19th of January from 7.00 – 9.00 pm via Zoom presenting “Rich Dad, Poor Dad, what the Rich teach their kids about money”, by Robert Kiyosaki.
And we will invite you to one of our next Personal Journey’s “Emoshon kiko e ta? Ki efekto e tin?” for the 20th of February and we will share some motivational videos on “How to release and overcome trauma’s”. From connection and alignment to impactful collaboration

Our focus in 2021
This year we will focus on “enabling alignments and collaborations to create impactful changes in all walks of life in Curaçao”. This we will do, while we will continue to connect with and interview new Influencers active locally and our diaspora. Up to this moment 18th of January 2021, we have interviewed 128.

On-line Zoom meeting on the 23rd of March titled: “From connection and alignment to impactful collaboration”
In collaboration with Vision Curaçao 2030 that is an original initiative of Dr.Miguel Goede, we will start organizing as of the 23rd of March, online meetings twice a year. As Vision Curacao 2030 is offering a bottom up vision for Curaçao it offers all involved, a unique opportunity to take notice, give their input and contribute towards the achievement of the goals and vision of Vision Curaçao 2030.

The idea in these on-line meetings is to during the preparation to: “Jointly look at how we can accelerate alignments and collaborations, to create real impactful changes in all walks of life in Curacao”.
Day: 23rd of March
Time: 2 - 4 PM via Zoom.

 

What is our intention?
We want to create interest, inspire and enable those we have interviewed to take notice of the categories of Influencers we have interviewed up to now. Inspire and enable them to explore possible collaborations that can add value to their own future endeavors.

How are we planning to achieve this?
We will approach every single Influencer with these following questions:

1. How can we create more interest for and enable more alignments and collaborations among those we have interviewed and all others that they consider helpful, to achieve impactful changes on the island?
a. What suggestions do they have?
b. We will send a questionnaire that they can fill in to send in their feedback.


2. Have they taken notice of Vision Curaçao 2030 and how can they contribute to the realization of this vision?
a. What suggestions do they have related to this Vision Curaçao 2030 and its 5 moonshots?
3. Are they willing to participate in our on-line meeting on the 23rd of March from 2 – 4 pm local time.

For the 23rd of March we will of course, welcome all those willing to contribute to help further our goal to enable alignments and collaborations creating impactful changes.

The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020
The goal of the Share2Uplift movement is to: “Identify 250 leaders from all walks of life to connect, align and create impactful changes in all walks of life, which includes intergenerational collaboration by the end of 2021.” We will use interviewing Influencers, meet-and-greet events, “train-the-trainers”-programs on “Emotional Mastery” and “Intentionality “as national intervention strategies, to reach this goal on top of our goal to scale up the possibilities to connect, align and create impact via a virtual platform. We believe that with collaborating with Miguel Goede on the virtual Vision 2030 platform, we will accelerate the possibilities to connect the diaspora and others elsewhere in the world and on the island willing to constructively create impactful changes in Curaçao, to join. Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:

– Create an inspiring vision of the future;

– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;

– Manage delivery of the vision;

– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

These criteria are now being polished.

We also consider these 5 values of the most important ones for Share2Uplift aligners. They are:

• Peace from within;

• Compassion;

• Respectfulness;

• Integrity;

• Responsibility. As we will progress towards this goal we will update you on the progress.

Influencer Rocher Cyrus: determined, innovative and educator

 

Could you share with us some information of your family life? Were you born here in Curaçao?
I come from a family of eight children and was born in Suriname, but have strong ties with Curaçao. My grandpa worked for the Shell and my dad was raised on Curaçao and went to school here. I now live in Curaçao and I am 38 years old, married and a father of a lovely daughter of 3.5 months old. Both of my parents are still alive and the live lessons they thought me are invaluable.

 

What was more precisely, what they taught you?
They modelled in their actions what they considered valuable and that is the biggest lesson I learned from them. I am now trying to apply that. “Actions speak more than words”.

 

Could you share something of your educational background and your experiences?
I went to the University of Curaçao to study accounting and concluded my thesis on Corporate Governance with Dr. Miguel Goede PhD.

Subsequently, I continued my accounting studies through the United States and became a United States Certified Public Accountant (US CPA). In addition, I also obtained my Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation from the Certified Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) from the United Kingdom (UK). Having an educational background from different regions (Curaçao, UK and United States), enabled me to take the best of these regions.

 

You work as a CPA-er running your own firm now called “Global International Management”. Furthermore we have noticed that you are very internationally oriented and have worked in different countries in the region? Can you expand a little bit on this?
I gained over 10+ years experience as an auditor within the “Big Four” firms KPMG and PWC working in the Netherlands, and Dutch Caribbean serving clients all over the world. However in the end, I choose to return and settle on “Dushi Kòrsou”. I identified a need for qualified finance professionals in the so-called underserved regions like Surinam, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and some Latin-American countries. This triggered me to start my own firm, Global International Management 8 years ago. Our main objective is to drive innovation through technology, education, connectivity and we serve South America, the (Dutch) Caribbean, Netherlands and Belgium.

 

Technology: We introduced technological tools in the above regions that make the work of accountants and financial institutions more effective and efficient. One of these tools is confirmation.com, which is being used by nearly all audit firms and banks in the above regions.

 

Education: We have Artificial Intelligent (AI) learning tools that individualize learning for students who want to become US CPA’s or CMA’s. Basically, every student is getting personalized feedback, which increases their retention and learning curve, all with the help of AI. We serve over 300 students from the before mentioned regions that are using this innovative new way of learning and partner with 2000+ International Universities. Further we provide online and on-demand training for (finance) professionals and companies ranging from topics such as Cybersecurity, IFRS, Blockchain, Data Analytics, Leadership and other hot topics. This market is growing rapidly due to the impact of COVID on traditional learning models.

 

Connectivity: Leveraging our technological tools and specific type of educational choices enables us to serve clients and students all around the world. Currently we are assisting US based companies in applying for COVID-19 relief funding that is made available by the US Government. This is one of the main reasons why US CPA’s are currently most in demand according to a LinkedIn 2020 job report. We hope that more local accountants and students on Curaçao would choose to become US CPA’s to help us serve this huge market of USD 9 trillion in relieve funding and other international opportunities that can be managed right here from Curaçao.

 

Before the Covid-era, I was also a frequent speaker in New York at the Yearly Cybersecurity Awareness event organized by the Association of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

 

As an innovative entrepreneur, you also invested in Curaçao Business Magazine, why did you do this and I have taken noticed that it is also available in other regions?
In general, accountants speak the language of businesses. We have a good overview about what businesses are struggling with. I concluded that it was a natural fit that as accountants, we are in a good position to talk about business and I decided to take over Curaçao Business Magazine in 2018 from the prior owner. In addition, we have an exclusive collaboration with the Curaçao Chamber of Commerce connecting us to South America, other parts of the Caribbean, the Netherlands and the US.

 

What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
I was born and raised in Suriname which is a developing country. Becoming a United States Certified Professional Accountant (US CPA) provided me numerous opportunities. Based on this personal experience, I want to provide the same chances to others. We have students from wealthy countries such as the Netherlands, Bahamas and Cayman Islands which we value. However most of our students come from countries such as Venezuela, Suriname, Jamaica and other developing regions. It feels so great to see that once some of these students completed their studies and become US CPA’s or CMA’s that they are starting to work in the largest financial centers of the world, such as New York and Singapore. This is the main reason why I am such a strong promotor of education.

 

When do you consider that you have been successful in your personal and business/professional life, let us say 5 years from now?Personally, I am successful, if I stay healthy and have a good relationship with family and friends, while spending as much time as possible with my daughter as she is growing up. Professionally I would love to see that we grow with the same pace like we did in 2020. Yes, I said it right “like we did in 2020”. Since the start of our company, we focused on everything “online” and finally it is paying off due to the impact of COVID.

 

What are the challenges that you are dealing with? And how are you dealing with these different challenges you confront?
Most of the challenges that I am dealing with, have to do with changing the mindset of people in order to embrace innovation. I have a strong believe that we deliver value with our technological tools and services and that it is a matter of time for us to become mainstream. This is keeping me focused.

 

Do you use your inner voice to evaluate when dilemma’s show up? How does that work for you?
Yes, always listen to your inner self. Combine that with a dose of commence sense, speak to other experienced professionals that you can rely on for some wisdom, but at the end always trust your own inner voice. This also helps to deal with the consequences as you made your own decisions.
For example, based on our history in Surinam and Curaçao, we are very oriented towards the Netherlands in my profession as an accountant and therefore we could miss out on much larger opportunities. The US Financial Market is the largest in the world and the US is far more influential than the Netherlands in the financial industry. I followed my inner voice, researched the facts and decided to study to become a US CPA. It was the best decision and allowed me to identify and serve “international niche markets” right here from Curacao. As I also worked in the Netherlands I am able to compare and take the best approaches from both worlds

 

How are you trying also to keep up with your personal knowledge and skills levels?
I have an inner drive to keep learning. That is one of the main reasons why I am the channel learning partner of some of the world’s largest learning organizations in our niche such as, Becker Professional Education and the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. We have a learning catalog with over 1000+ courses which are being updated regularly. This helps me to choose what I want to learn and to stimulate my life-long learning as a professional.

 

What are your strengths?
I am determined and don’t give up easily and never too scared to learn by trial and error. I love technology!

 

Do you have hobbies or interests that you are also passionate about?
I do play soccer, basketball and also piano. In the good old days, I used to play in several bands on Curaçao.

 

If you as Rocher would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Mexico or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
I am a people’s person, and I love to hear other people their life stories to understand them better and connect with them.

 

How would you describe Rocher in one word or one sentence?
Determined!

 

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
My parents!

 

What is a trait that is still work in progress?
To remain focused and not to get distracted.

 

What was a defining moment in your life?
When my daughter was born this year and when I started my own business 8 years ago. As I said the best decision I ever took in my life.

 

Where do you want to be 15 to 20 years from now with your career?
Hopefully nearing an early pension and by that time our company have become mainstream and a house hold name in the world of accountancy.

 

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years from now?
That I supported them in every way I could.

 

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao as we are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, recession and in the middle of growing environmental challenges because of the global warming consequences?
As an entrepreneur and business owner I should stay optimistic. I believe that we shouldn’t waste a perfect crisis.
We needed this crisis in order to re-invent ourselves.
So, let’s go after it. Also, happy to inform that all our FinTech tools are eliminating paper which is also good for our environment.

 

Is there anything else that you would like to add?
I hope that this crisis will teach us that we need to embrace change in an early stage, in order to be able to anticipate another crisis.

Reflecting on 2020 and looking forward to 2021

Where do we stand at the end of 2020?

We have:

• Reached the mark of 127 Influencers we have interviewed. Look at the list of the Influencers, some are more than one person we reported on;

• Organized 9 Master Your Mind-platform sessions in 2020 (see list of the books we presented below) and started for the first time to let more presenters present parts of a book as we launched this concept during the Global Enterprise Week in November;

• Continued to offer different types of workshops aimed at enabling greater personal mastery to those interested and we are currently facilitating the 6th group of participants in their “Personal Journey, Emoshon kiko e ta?” and preparing to start Personal Journey - 7 on the 9th of January 2021. We have on average had 4 attendees in our Journey’s offered as a joint workshop by Soul Garden Curaçao, Master Your Mind- Consultancy and Training and Uplifting BV;

• Decided to collaborate and be an active member of Vision Curaçao2030 initiated by Miguel Goede, as our efforts need a vision for the island.The vision is an effort of all those willing to actively work towards achievement of the vision”, according to Miguel Goede that took the initiative to start with it.



What is our goal for 2021?
The goal of the Share2Uplift movement is to: “Identify 250 ethical leaders from all walks of life to connect, align and creating impactful changes in all walks of life during 2021.”

In 2021, we will focus on enabling collaboration aimed at “creating real changes in all walks of life”. We believe that we have over 250 Influencers connected simply by now having interviewed 127 Influencers, some were more than one person and we assume that at least twice this number of people one way or the other are connected and aligned. Our challenge in 2021 to leverage and enable collaboration aimed at “creating impactful changes”, now also as part of the Vision 2030 initiative.


What activities shall we undertake to reach this goal?

We will continue to:

 

• Interview Influencers, including diaspora living elsewhere in the world, willing to constructively connect, align to create impactful changes in Curaçao;

• Consolidate the “Community of Practice “Emoshon kiko e ta?” of all those who have participated in one of our Personal Journey workshops, where they can learn from each another experiences as they are using one or more of their acquired “toolkit” and we share new content on every 2nd Tuesday of the month;

• Present books in our monthly Master Your Mind-platform on-line sessions on every 3rd Tuesday of the month, increasingly via group presentations of books to accelerate the increase of insights of participants interested in personal growth;

• Offer weekly “group of 8”- sessions where via group entanglement, participants can balance their personal energy while focusing on personal, group or country intentions;

• Offer daily group meditations;

• Offer a myriad of workshops aimed at enabling those interested in their own personal development especially those interested in the mastery of their emotions via “Emoshon kiko e ta? Ki efekto e tin?”;

• Actively be involved in Curaçao Vision 2030 efforts to manifest the vision which includes 5 moonshots (priority areas) in the coming year(s).

Stay tuned for these new activities in 2021.

 

New activities in 2021?

We will:

• Offer “train-the-trainers”-programs on “Emotional Mastery”. By doing this we will create a ripple effect, where more people are able to enable others with mastery over “Emotions and living Intentionally”;

• Scale up the possibilities to connect, align and create impact by consciously seeking more virtual platforms to connect and align with and by doing this, accelerate the possibilities to align create impactful changes in Curaçao which will include the involvement of our “diaspora”;

• Consciously look for collaborations with other persons, groups, networks that are working on addressing emotions, mindsets and behavioral changes in Curaçao and by joining forces put “Emotions” on the national agenda as it is a subject matter that needs priority attention.

Influencer Joeri Oltheten: an unorthodox creative collaborator

 

Could you share with us some information of your family life? 
I was born in Holland 40 years ago this year. I always thought that at 40 years I would have become serious, but that is not really the case. My mother is from Curaçao and my father is from Holland. The funny thing is that my father is from Holland and he hasn’t lived in Holland for the last 20 years and my mother was born in Curaçao and she hasn’t lived in Curaçao in the last 50 years. So I come from a family of migrants you could say. I grew up in the Netherlands and also lived in Peru and also lived in Curaçao for a couple of months only, attended Kindergarten and in Peru I went to the primary school and then we went back to Holland. I have lived in Leiden and Amsterdam. And in 2016, I decided to move to Curaçao as my fiancée and now wife, was expecting our first child and we decided that our child needed to be born and raised in Curaçao . That was 4,5 years ago. That was not the only reason, as I also wanted to contribute to Curaçao . Because I grew up with Curaçao in my heart so to speak. My grandfather was Guillermo Rosario. There is where my love for Curaçao and Papiamentu came from. My mother is also a writer and translator and my father is an anthropologist. So the love for culture, people and language was something I was born with and really instilled in me from a very young age. Yes, my parents definitely contributed to who I am today. From my mother I think I got my connection with the people and the importance of doing social work, work for the community to be able to connect with all kinds of people from all walks of life. My father taught me to be adventurous, to dare to do things you have no experience with. To go the extra mile.


Is that the reason why you are an entrepreneur?

It is funny because my parents are not entrepreneurs, they never were. I don’t come from an entrepreneurial family from both sides of my family, they are more artists, they are more creative entrepreneurs you could say, but I do think that all of my family are “smart asses”. People who think they know it better and instead of complain about their boss think that they better do it by themself. If you think you have a better understanding of reality, go ahead and try to make it work. Then if it doesn’t work, you can then only blame yourself and no one else.

I have one older brother that is 1,5 years older than me and it helped me a lot because I could just imitate him as a child, because he was out there being the pioneer and I could just learn from him and adapt.

I have two children now, a daughter and a son. In Curaçao they say, you are ready when you have both a son and a daughter, let’s see if that is true. Having children for me is the most spiritual experience I have ever had in my life. To be able to help these creatures find their way into the world is truly amazing and it helps you to, not take yourself too seriously. You have no other choice even if you think, you are that important as the next minute, you are just changing diapers or they are just peeing in your face. So I think it is a good way not to take yourself too seriously.

Could you share something of you eductional background and your experiences?
I have studied Business Economics at the University of Amsterdam, as I didn’t understand economics and after finishing my studies, I realized that I had to do more research, because the idea of economics or the way they saw it wasn’t working, that is they way we did it on a country level (macro) and on a business level (micro) as well.

Can you tell me more about it?
The word Economy I have understood, comes from the greek word “oikonomia” which means running a household either of a family, the state or country. It is about getting along with each other and how we are making use of the resources on the planet. When I was living in Peru, I was confronted with a large inequality between the poor, the “have nots” and those who had. And nobody could explain this to me why this was like that. I thought that by studying Economy, I would learn more about this system. Which wasn’t the case. The study was more about making money, stocks and for countries the GDP. What I learned didn’t say anything about whether all stakeholders involved would get a fair share or not. It was about mathematics and numbers with no attention to social aspects of an economy. Although the greek word meant running a household, we never discussed people, nor psychology, nor sociology nor history. When I had finished my studies we had a big recession. It was in 2008 and a lot of students where fed up of the economics, that they were being taught. Normally in science one would look at different angles of a subject matter, but not in the case of Economy. What we were taught and our text books was a different reality.

Doughnut (economic model)
With every new recession the inequality has become bigger, the damage of the economic system on the environment has become bigger and there is an ever growing gap between the “have’s” and “have nots”. This was not in alignment with the mantra’s that we were taught, that growth would benefit all. Crises has always been the reason for looking at new ways for designing society and economic systems. The doughnut economy that originated from crises helps people to think different of their own reality and is working to create also a social society that is inclusive. It is not merely about creating a green economy as this could still lead to exclusion and an unequal distribution of our wealth. The doughnut economy aims at making the social distribution of wealth inclusive. I have lived in Peru and I have seen how Sendero Luminoso which started with good intentions based on their Marxist Leninist ideology, fell victim to the same power structures and the created new elites, thus basically made the same mistake.

That is why I am an advocate for the introduction of the Basic Income and the Doughnut Economy as it works with networks and is based on sharing. We are now living in a time of great access for a lot of people to Smart phones and the internet. Nowadays with these new means of communications it is much easier to explore collaborations and to focus on the world wide market, for business opportunities and to influence other changes that we need to have. And you can have that impact yourself.

I have seen from your presence on the internet that you also have an artistic part of you, could you expand on this?
My grandfather was a writer, politician and poet. My mother is also a poet and translator and from my mother I got interested in different languages. From my father’s side of the family I got my musical talents. DHe is in music and different family members of his family are professional musicians. So music and words come relatively easy to me. I can’t sing that well, but then came Rap music and I could use words in a rhythmical way and express myself. So I started rapping in the early 90-ties. I used casettes and I would send them to my cousins in Curaçao with music from Holland and they would send the casettes back with music from here. When I was 17 years old, I started rapping in English then in Dutch and then I got more serious and people came to know me under the name “Pharao”.
This is a funny story btw. I once arrived late at the studio for some recordings and they asked me why I was late. I was honest and I told them that I had visited a museum. I went to Nieuwe Kerk where they had an exhibition of Black Pharao’s. So they never had met a rapper that came in late, because he had to attend a museum so they decided to call me “Pharao”. I was for about 10 years involved in recording music, doing shows and making really nice videos. In the beginning I felt great saying things in my texts that I was angry about. Then I became aware and more conscious of the effect this had on my audience. The texts of the music became more positive and I started using my texts to reach and uplift my audiences and contribute to their state of mind, which is powerful tool that could even be live changing. Nowadays this artistic side of me is still important ,but now I do it on a semi-professional basis, along side my other businesses.

Where does your interest come from to be an entrepreneur, can you tell us more about this?
I think when I started it was because of a lack of other options. I had finished my studies, but I couldn’t find a position that I was looking for as it was difficult to match my interests and the jobs being offered. So I started working at a small company of a friend where we had 5 to 6 people working during 2,5 years. I learned how to run a business and I learned what “not” to do. I got into ethical conflict with the owner as I truely believe that you should be true to your principles. I then started Cinqo, my own business with a colleague of my in 2008 in October and that was just when a recession started and people asked me: “Why do you start right now in October?” I was let’s just start and I was doing what I use to work at. I gave it a try and we were involved in soft ware development in 2008 and helped clients in recruitment etc...

In the beginning we were aiming at a very diverse client base. In 2015 me and my fiancée decided to come and live in Curaçao. I took Cinqo with me and now we have the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Chamber of Commerce, ACU, CTB, SOAW as clients. Our missionis to help others thrive. We do project management, strategic consultancy and business development. We work with organizations that want to reach the next level. We select companies we work with as we have evolved from anything goes at the start, to have a plan and goal so that clients can recognize and understand who we are. In the end people do business with people, it boils down to that personal aspect. We work for clients that are social, innovative, creative or culturally active and by doing that contribute to society as a whole. That is how we select who we want to work for.

What is the relationship with Ngrane?
We work with them regularly, it’s a nice organic collaboration. We see each other as friends who help each other in a business sense. There are so many creative innovative pioneers on Curaçao and Curaçao could use their skills and this could help to create a digital more enabled society. They are great to have in the doughnut economy.

I have understood that coming to Curaçao was a deliberate choice, could you elaborate on this a little more? Why Curaçao?
I grew up with Curaçao in my heart. In knew when I was in the Netherlands that I always wanted to make an impact and be at service to the community. In Holland many things were saturated or difficult to change. While in Curaçao everything seems to be possible. I felt it would resonate with the person I am to come and work and live in Curaçao . My fiancéee was really enthusiastic about this idea.

Leaving from living in a small appartment in Amsterdam I had a chance to start with Wintertuin in Curaçao. Wintertuin is a literature organization which does lots of work in literature and story telling and the idea was to start some projects in Curaçao. I set up the foundation Wintertuin Curaçao and my first project became “Kurá di kuenta”. It is about stories of the elderly and it fits with our oral tradition. We have an aging population where a lot of people live in isolation. We have done “Kurá di kuenta” 4 to 5 times and it is a great thing to do. We started our interviews of the elderly at Birgen de Rosario and the first 3 editions were about elderly clients from Habaai, Nos Lantèrno, Richardushuis and Mi Amparo. During 6 months we intervied people on multiple subject matters like love, friendship, 30 di mei, spirits, Wega di Number.


Once we earned their trust and confidence they were so willing to share their experiences giving us a clear social perspective of culturally how did we do things in the past. Things that are still relevant today teenage pregnancy. It has become an interesting read if you want to learn more and want to know more about our island. This was one of the projects. Now we are focusing on the neighborhood level, asking questions to the residents on how they were formed and what their history was.

On purpose I have chosen the neighborhoods with a not so good reputation and they deliver the best stories and these neighborhoods also need some positive attention. Neighborhoods like Koraal Specht and Fleur de Marie, with stories about immigrants and the time when the bridge in construction came down and this reflected through the eyes of the participants to help them to become authors. It is so fantastic to see them come to the stage and see them read a part of the book that is their own story. It is so awesome.We were brought up to sit still, sit neatly etc...and there is so much to share and if we value those lessons we would value ourselves and also pass this on to the next generations.

We have also organized festivals and an international writing course, were spoken word artists from Holland and Belgium were presenting their poetry skills and enabling local artists and for me that is very special.

You are seeing lots of opportunities for the creative entrepreneurs in Curaçao , could you expand on this as also a representative of the creative sector?
I see possibilities in the creative sector and the wellness industry.I see that our people can be very creative and as they can make anything during carnaval. Look at their outfits and hairstyles, creativity is in the blood of the people of Curaçao and they do it with a lot of intrinsic motivation.

It would be a lost opportunity if they don’t think that it can be a means of income. Most of these creatives have a job and on the side they do fantastic creative work. In Curaçao we don’t have a history to promoting creative things with our children when they grow up. We are being stimulated to become an accountant, a doctor while although we are a small creative island we can supply and export to the unlimited need in the world for music, design, games and clothes. These are all craft business opportunities you can export through the internet and it needs more attention. If you combine this with the tourism industry, tourist are looking for something more authentic so we can offer these products when they come here, because it is typical Curaçao and not just some other place in the world.

I grew up thinking that these people are so creative and we have such a tiny population, what if they would see themselves as professionals and if they would develop their talent, build their networks and as we speak different languages and understand their background, how much more successful wouldn’t they be.

I would like to also expand on another business venture that I am involved in, Wawuya.

It is a business where me and my partner are using plants, moringa that is growing on the island to make moringa oil.

The elderly knew that it has medicinal properties and the younger people are not aware of it and they use more synthetic products. When I visited Dominica once, I became aware of all the benefits. It is a great product and via Wawuya we now have 40 points of sales in Curaçao and in Bonaire. This product fits in the wellness pilar of our economy. The moringa of Curaçao has charasteritics beneficial for the health of your skin, your immune system and hair. This business is aligned with the dougnut economy, it grows easily on the island and we pick the seeds or people pick seeds for us and bring it to us. We pay a price per kilo and it gives people whom lost their job an income. I believe that we could do the same with sentebibu, Mango products, Chimichimi. I believe via Wawuya as producer of final natural products made out of plants, we have so much more to discover. Curaçao will benefit of this on top of being an excellent wellness destination.


Could you tell us some more of Cinqo Consultancy?
What I see now that because of the corona crisis we need to be able to create a new economy based on the principles of the dougnut economy. With the Ministry of MEO and some other people from different barios we will provide workshops starting January in neighborhood and see what people feel about this aimed at inspiring them and engage them. Cinqo is helping organizations and projects that promote sustainable development and that are now aligned with the doughnut economy.


Is food security a part of this?
Yes, food security is an important part of it.

We have had a dependence mentality and now we are forced to become more self sufficient. We need to find new ways for agriculture like Permaculture and syntropic Agroforestry. In syntropic Agroforestry it uses the plants that grow in a tropic climate like the plantain, casave, avocado and other plants that grow in our region and mimic the natural eco-system that can become self sufficient. In that situation one can grow crops in a couple months time creating jungles literally right here in Curaçao . With that type of innovation we are looking at new ways to solve old issues. The same can done with what we are doing with our housing energy needs. We need to create more momentum to make it possible to support each other and create an inclusive regenerative distributive island to grow food that all of us eat. The boycott of Venezuela made it difficult as we lost our supply line for fruits and vegetables. But sometimes you need a crisis to find new solutions. We have shown to have resilience to deal with all kinds of crises. With my initiative I really want to connect the dots from different generations to work on one common goal.

 

What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
Create a better world by doing what I can to make this a better place for each other. Meaning to look for ourselves and our neighbors and be more aware of this. In Curaçao , the differences are big whilst the distances are so short. It gives me lots of satisfaction to contribute to other people’s well being. It is to help myself, people and all living beings to thrive.

 

When do you consider that you have been successful in your personal and business/professional life, let us say 5 years from now?
Personally I want to be a good husband and good father. I want to help people that I value and love to see their smiles on their faces at times.

Professionally, that would be to launch a new business and if we can continue the doughnut economy that respects and is good for people and nature.

If with Wintertuin Curaçao we would be able to help artists to take a next step in their development.

If Wawuya would have expand their product portfolio and export to Europe, the USA and other places in the world. Recently I made a song for the film “Buladó.


What are the challenges that you are dealing with? And how are you dealing with these different challenges you confront?
Every day has its new challenges, but then again that is life. It is important to enjoy the process it is not about the accomplishment itself. It is about learning from your mistakes, be open and don’t be judgmental and fail quickly. I have made lot of mistakes in my life and it is a great way to learn. To forget about it consciously but to remember to do it better the next time. Nothing is easy but it nothing is impossible. Challenges are a motivation to try again and to fail better next time.


Do you use your inner voice to evaluate when dilemma’s show up? How does that work for you?
I use it for sure, although it is difficult to distinguish sometimes between your intuition and sometimes your sub conscious mind. When I grew up, I was afraid of heights. And one day I decide to go paragliding and this made me become aware of the fact that your mind can play tricks on you. Is from your gut and heart or from your mind? If it is from your heart/gut that is your true voice.

 

How are you trying also to keep up with your personal knowledge and skills levels?
I love to read. I always loved reading. I read a lot of non fiction. I try to keep up with my line of business and read books of other economists. I read about people working on projects in societies that are also working on creative projects with other entrepreneurs. I follow seminars digitally, I listen to speeches that inform and inspire me. As I am also involved in Wawuya, I read about scientific research related to that, to give me a better idea of what we can do with Wawuya.

I love reading a good old book the most.

What are your strengths?
I am not afraid of fear. I like to confront myself with fear. I go out of my comfort side always. I believe that courage will always be compensated for. I am a team player. I like to take initiatives, l like to work with people with skills I myself don’t have. I focus on things I am good on to work with others so to achieve common goals.

Do you have hobbies or interests that you are also passionate about?
I love music, literature, sports like playing soccer, but I have no time to watch it. Playing domino, that is a thing from Curacao, spending time with nice people, chilling at social gatherings and having good conversations. I also love to travel which because of the corona crises is a challenge at this moment.

 

If you as Joeri would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Mexico or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
I am a creator, someone that creates experiences and who tries to help to create a better world, always creating. It keeps me going. If they would throw me off an airplane in Mexico for example, where I landed I would create with other people.

 

How would you describe Joeri in one word or one sentence?
An unorthodox creative collaborator.


Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
My mother, she has always been inspiring and my father. To see their love and dedication for the family, the unconditionally love to experience this as a child.

I also like Bob Marley and Malcolm X because they were people who weren’t afraid to speak their mind. They weren’t afraid to take risks and in their own way they were trying to work on creating a better planet without compromising their principles.

But I am also inspired by people from the neighborhood that help others with an open heart and an open mind.

 

What is a trait that is still work in progress?
My focus is usually caught in different directions and sometimes I admired people with that focus on one thing and one specific goal. But at the other hand the more spread your attention is the more I see it as a characteristic of my versatility broadness of what I do as it gives so much satisfaction to be involved with different walks of life. Well in fact its a big contradiction and it will be a battle for ever for me.


What was a defining moment in your life?
Going to Peru that was very important. I grew up in the Netherlands were they have different cultural norms and values. And trying to find my way at a very young age as there is not one way. I have learned that there are different approaches to life.

The second one would be dealing with birth of my first child. To be responsible for another human being for 100 % special changes your outlook of life. At least it did with mine.


Where do you want to be 20 years from now with your career?
Hard to tell for that long a period. I don’t really know. For 5 years from now I have plan for the world is going to develop where the needs are and I like to be flexible. 5 years ago I started a business in moringa oil. I tried things with other companies and failed. There was a lot of trial and error. I would say that I would be involved in social creative, innovative projects and people. It will be a focus not too much on the form but the goal in itself as the from will follow the goal in these projects.


What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years from now?
I am real person I am this guy that you see that no matter what the circumstances is there for them.

I try to contribute as much as I can. I don’t care too much what people think of me btw. If they feel my authenticity of who I am and what I do, this can inspire them, you only realize yourself only any way.

 

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao as we are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, recession and in the middle of growing environmental challenges because of the global warming consequences?
Everything that could have gone bad went bad in this past year. Just the fact that we survived so far means something to me. We have had black outs, lockdowns, no sales of alcohol, the corona crisis, the economic consequences of the economic down turn and still 9 of 10 people still have a positive attitude that gives hope. Everything starts with a thought. The way people think is promising, if we can joint forces and trust each other in the process, the basis is there to survive and create things. I once met this lady doing a cleaning job and she told me that if she would win the lottery she would throw a party for her friends, do something nice for other people despite all the adversity. We try to make the best out of every day life. If we can improve the infrastructure and foundation of our people we can become more successful at what we are doing. For example I see lots of creative people working together like David Van Delden, Stephen Garcia, Gino Jacobs and Boudino de Jong. It requires a team to make and sell the product. When people complement one another and based on a supportive system that enables them to work together, we can all can thrive and make progress.

One of the 250 Influencers of Curaçao
Joeri Oltheten is a value driven, energetic, dynamic, multi-facetted artist and entrepreneur. As he is driven to creating a better world, earning his Business Economics degree at the University of Amsterdam didn’t give him an answer to some real-life issues, like the widening gap between the “have’s” and “have nots” and the environmental challenges in the world. In 2015 he decided to come and live in Curaçao as he grew up with Curaçao in his heart. He is always looking for opportunities to create and add value, based on the principles of the doughnut economy as it dealt with inclusiveness and advocates the circular economy. Starting Wawuya as producer of final natural products made out of plants aimed also for the export, he is “hands on” contributing to the doughnut economy in Curaçao . As owner of Cinqo, he is helping out different local clients and as an artist, he uses words and music to uplift people via his Rap-songs. Through Wintertuin, a literature organization, he started different projects in Curaçao like “Kurá di Kuenta” with stories from elderly and stories told by inhabitants from neighborhoods. He has organized festivals and an international writing course, were spoken word artists from Holland and Belgium were presenting their poetry skills and enabling local artist to present their work. As a creator living his purpose of making the world a better world, we have so much more that we can expect from Joeri because of his possibility thinking mindset and his tendency to collaborate as a team-player “pure sang”. For all these reason’s we dearly love and deeply respect Joeri and consider him part of the 250 Influencers of the island representing the Business and the Creative sector.

 

The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020
The goal of the Share2Uplift movement is to: “Identify 250 leaders from all walks of life to connect, align and create impactful changes in all walks of life, which includes intergenerational collaboration by the end of 2021.” We will use interviewing Influencers, meet-and-greet events, “train-the-trainers”-programs on “Emotional Mastery” and “Intentionality “as national intervention strategies, to reach this goal on top of our goal to scale up the possibilities to connect, align and create impact via a virtual platform. We believe that with collaborating with Miguel Goede on the virtual Vision 2030 platform, we will accelerate the possibilities to connect the diaspora and others elsewhere in the world and on the island willing to constructively create impactful changes in Curaçao, to join. Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.

 

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:

– Create an inspiring vision of the future;

– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;

– Manage delivery of the vision;

– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

These criteria are now being polished.

We also consider these 5 values of the most important ones for Share2Uplift aligners. They are:

• Integrity;

Where do we stand at the end of 2020?
We have:

• Reached the mark of 127 Influencers we have interviewed.
Look at the list of the Influencers, some are more than one person we reported on;

• Organized 9 Master Your Mind-platform sessions in 2020 (see list of the books we presented below) and started for the first time to let more presenters present parts of a book as we launched this concept during the Global Enterprise Week in November;

• Continued to offer different types of workshops aimed at enabling greater personal mastery to those interested and we are currently facilitating the 6th group of participants in their “Personal Journey, Emoshon kiko e ta?” and preparing to start Personal Journey - 7 on the 9th of January 2021. We have on average had 4 attendees in our Journey’s offered as a joint workshop by Soul Garden Curaçao, Master Your Mind- Consultancy and Training and Uplifting BV;

• Decided to collaborate and be an active member of Vision Curaçao2030 initiated by Miguel Goede, as our efforts need a vision for the island.The vision is an effort of all those willing to actively work towards achievement of the vision”, according to Miguel Goede that took the initiative to start with it.


What is our goal for 2021?
The goal of the Share2Uplift movement is to: “Identify 250 ethical leaders from all walks of life to connect, align and creating impactful changes in all walks of life during 2021.”

In 2021, we will focus on enabling collaboration aimed at “creating real changes in all walks of life”. We believe that we have over 250 Influencers connected simply by now having interviewed 127 Influencers, some were more than one person and we assume that at least twice this number of people one way or the other are connected and aligned. Our challenge in 2021 to leverage and enable collaboration aimed at “creating impactful changes”, now also as part of the Vision 2030 initiative.


What activities shall we undertake to reach this goal? 
We will continue to:

• Interview Influencers, including diaspora living elsewhere in the world, willing to constructively connect, align to create impactful changes in Curaçao;

• Consolidate the “Community of Practice “Emoshon kiko e ta?” of all those who have participated in one of our Personal Journey workshops, where they can learn from each another experiences as they are using one or more of their acquired “toolkit” and we share new content on every 2nd Tuesday of the month;

• Present books in our monthly Master Your Mind-platform on-line sessions on every 3rd Tuesday of the month, increasingly via group presentations of books to accelerate the increase of insights of participants interested in personal growth;

• Offer weekly “group of 8”- sessions where via group entanglement, participants can balance their personal energy while focusing on personal, group or country intentions;

• Offer daily group meditations;

• Offer a myriad of workshops aimed at enabling those interested in their own personal development especially those interested in the mastery of their emotions via “Emoshon kiko e ta? Ki efekto e tin?”;

• Actively be involved in Curaçao Vision 2030 efforts to manifest the vision which includes 5 moonshots (priority areas) in the coming year(s).

New activities in 2021?
We will:

• Offer “train-the-trainers”-programs on “Emotional Mastery”. By doing this we will create a ripple effect, where more people are able to enable others with mastery over “Emotions and living Intentionally”;

• Scale up the possibilities to connect, align and create impact by consciously seeking more virtual platforms to connect and align with and by doing this, accelerate the possibilities to align create impactful changes in Curaçao which will include the involvement of our “diaspora”;

• Consciously look for collaborations with other persons, groups, networks that are working on addressing emotions, mindsets and behavioral changes in Curaçao and by joining forces put “Emotions” on the national agenda as it is a subject matter that needs priority attention.

Dolph van Stapele: Entrepreneurial, positive, fun-loving, solution oriented and spiritual

 


Could you share with us some information of your family life
I was born in Amsterdam and came to Curacao 25 years ago when I was in the Marine Corps in 1996. I come from a big family. My parents had two children, one brother and myself. My parents divorced and my father got remarried, and from his side I have three other brothers and one sister. From my mother’s side I also have another brother. We all get along very well. My mother came to live in Curaçao one year after I came to Curaçao and she still lives here. The rest of the family lives in Amsterdam and its surroundings.

How important were you parents for you in who you have become now?
My parents are very nice people. I am fortunate to have had the freedom to do what I wanted to do under their parental guidance.


Could you share something of you eductional background and your experiences?
We lived in the Middle East, in Bahrein from the age of two until I was six. There I only spoke English. Back in Holland I quickly had to learn to speak proper Dutch. Once I was in high school, I had to work hard, the good grades didn’t come easy. When I was in my last year I quit school to enlist and I became a marine. I stayed in the Marine Corps for 1,5 to 2 years. I had a good time and wanted to stay longer, because to me it was the best thing to do and be, but I didn’t fit very well in the army culture. So when I quit the marine I approached a camera man who was working for TV-11 to teach me his profession in 3 days, and it was during these 3 days I really discovered my passion. So, it is in Curaçao that I learned this profession when I was 21 years old. Most people know me from this area of my expertise.


 

Where does your interest come from to be an entrepreneur and to invest in a spiritual center, can you tell us more about this?
From a young age I was interested in the deeper questions of life. I had questions about the essence of life, I asked myself what the truth was, and about the purpose of life. I was disappointed in adulthood, because I was lead to believe that growing older equaled being wiser. But it became clear to me that this not the case. I witnessed a lot of suffering around me on an individual level, but also on a societal level and even on a global scale.

This triggered me to dig deeper and study these philosophical matters and questions like ‘what are the choices that we as humans have?’. This wasn’t easy by the way, but eventually I found the Indian Buddhist traditions with their gurus and wise men. There I found answers that made sense to me. So, I found a teacher in Holland and got involved in this mighty process of existential questions and answers that I had been looking for. This personal spiritual quest started in the beginning of the year 2000 and mind you, I was working in the film industry, which in itself is not an industry that is based on spirituality in any form. So I kept this practice to myself. The corona crisis accelerated certain choices. The consciousness of people has changed.


Do you believe that corona came into the world to elevate the consciousness in the world?
No, I don’t think so. I think it has generated an increased consciousness as an outcome and effect, but it was not the reason. I believe reasons are created by people. This is exactly the beauty of these philosophical questions and answers. Everything we think of, at some point originated from a human perspective. The cosmos itself is also a human construct, just like every reason we can think of.

The lockdown, social distancing and everything around corona did help me to evolve and put my spiritual awareness more on the forefront of my life. We as human beings have become too dependent on external things. This means that every setback or dip we go through is hard. We have become so dependent on the system we live in, that we are unable to do the most simple of things. The corona crisis can actually make us stronger. We can free ourselves from the limiting perceptions we believed to be true up till now. We can learn to make our own food, we can learn to survive when push comes to shove and to live our life independent of the illusion of certainties that we as a society have created for ourselves.

We have known you to organize satsangs on a regular basis and we understand you have started a spiritual center. Can you expand a little bit on this?
Yes, my girlfriend and I started an ashram recently. Ashrams originated in India. An ashram is a cultural historic place where one can receive the wisdom of the teacher and deepen spirituality and awareness. It is a place where one can practice Buddhism. People who are interested in enlightment can visit and deepen their spiritual journey. I am a practioner of the Advaita Vendanta tradition that is fundamentally based on the non-duality principle. Why not start an ashram here in Curaçao? Twenty years ago there was no where I could go. So, we felt that this was the time to offer those on their path to spiritual enlightenment, a place where they can go and be.

I have been on my spiritual journey since the year 2010. After all these years I realized that I didn’t have any questions left in my spiritual journey, and it took quite some time before I started to share my knowledge of Zen and Advaita Vedanta and I started organizing satsangs which literally means “to be close to the truth”, and is a reflection on our true nature.

We started in August with our retreats, offering introduction retreats to Zen Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta. The program includes meditation, shared meals, alone time and of course the main ingredient the satsangs. Besides the retreats, we are open to those invested in their spiritual path. Ashram Curaçao is located on the premises of Dinah Veeris’s Herb Garden. We were looking for a place in the area of Fuik, so we went to see Dinah. After presenting our idea with her she offered us to start the ashram there and it is indeed an excellent place for the ashram. There are apartments available and by teaming up we are making full use of the potential of this venue. We recently planted a mini-food forest where we grow herbs, vegetables and fruit.

 

You are also involved in filming, as it is also your passion. Could you expand a little bit on this part of your life?
The filming has been something totally separate from the spiritual side of me. I have kept them separately on purpose. the film industry is all about outward appearances. While self-reflection and spiritual exploration is an inside job. For many of people this is hard to grasp. I was doing the satsangs on the side.

In the beginning we had 5 to 10 people attending our Satsangs in Advaita Vendata. I was offering this to people who were looking for answers. The past years I came more in the open with the Satsangs. I also started coaching people. I have noticed a growth in consciousness. People are trying to find and discover themselves, as they feel alienated from a society that is so focused on external things in live. So this was the moment to start with the Ashram. Covid -19 has made people aware of restlessness that was already there. A lot of people have mental issues and they are looking for mental stability and more inner peace. The demand for this is growing and the taboo on this subject matter is being broken as we speak. 20 years ago you were hesitant to share that you were meditating and/or doing yoga. Nowadays companies offer this to their employees and everybody is doing it in the morning.


Spiritual awareness is growing because there is a bigger need for it. This we notice at the Ashram also, as there is a lot of interest for it. Not necessary for the philosophical side of it but just the place where they can go for their inner peace.


The flipside of the corona crisis is that the artistic world in the world has collapsed. My income out of filming has lowered to around 10 to 20% of what I was earning before the corona crisis.

I have noticed that when things are moving forward and there is prosperity on the outside everything seems to work and if there is a crisis everything collapses. We have experienced such a prosperous era in the past 100 years and now we have to be aware that the coming 100 years, there will be more crises like the corona crisis and that we will have to deal with one way or the other.


For myself before the corona crisis I had a lifestyle, where I had enough to pay my bills, my refrigerator was full and I had my Harley Davidson. As a filmer and entrepreneur in Curaçao for the past 20 years, the future was unpredictable. It was tough at times and my income was irregular. This required excellent skills to communicate with the Bank over my mortgage payments and with Aqualectra over the monthly bills. This wasn’t easy.


Then came corona and this nudged me to reconsider my way of life. I didn’t want to stop filming as this is my passion and it is in my genes, so I decided to put the Ashram on the forefront of my activities.

 

What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be who you are right now?
Everything happens the way it happens. We as human beings think we need some kind of tool or something to be able to understand. Even as a child I never had any goals. I never planned anything. Everything just happened. I don’t have a WHY. Usually a WHY is triggered because of a discomfort or because we want to improve something. Life itself to me is the motivation and not what I think about what it should be. I don't think about it. I have no need to make things better. We are raised to think that everything should go well. I believe that if things go well or not so well, it is an experience. If things go well for you that is your personal experience. And everything goes as it goes. The more expectations we have the more we set ourselves up for disappointment. 


When do you consider that you have been successfull in your personal and business/professional life, let us say 5 years from now?
I have no idea. I never look at tomorrow. It doesn’t matter to me. I am satisfied with what is and in 5 years from now it will be the same.


What are the challenges that you are dealing with? And how are you dealing with these different challenges?

The corona crisis is a big challenge, as humanity is forced to adapt. Shifting my focus away from filmmaking and moving in the direction of the ashram is exciting and comforting. I am looking forward to further consolidating the ashram. Earning money in the film industry puts a lot of pressure on you as it is expected that you earn enough money to make a living. For 20 years I raced around the world to participate in beautiful projects. I was running around the world to meet the expectations that we grow up with within the Western world. I truly enjoyed it, but I have entered a different phase now. I can meditate in the ashram, organize Satsangs answering the bigger questions that people have on life itself and work on creating a self-sustainable agriculture. Stepping out the ratrace, creates so much inner peace.

Do you use your inner voice to evaluate when dilemma’s show up? How does that work for you?
The “Inner Voice” is more of an egoic state, that constantly tells you what to do. But their is no “Inner Voice” that is separate from you. Being human is an experience of consciousness and is the voice itself. The voice is another human construct. If you leave that out, then you will experience your true self. Pure consciousness doesn’t need the noise of thinking or an inner-voice to be whole. In a dualistic world view an illusionary disconnection has been created where we see people as separate beings. We are consciousness, we are awareness that sees itself. So there is no reason to work on being connected, as we have never been disconnected.

 

How are you trying to keep up with your personal knowledge and skill levels?
In spirituality there is no keeping up to do. When I was seeking answers and growth, I had my teacher. If you ask me the same question regarding filmmaking, then the answer is different. I’m always interested in new developments, new technology and so on. Knowing who you are in Zen is different from what we would consider knowledge in the western traditional sense. Knowing from a spiritual perspective is non-intellectual, it is intrinsic knowing. Knowing, not knowledge. Once recognized, there is no keeping up to do. It’s like riding a bike, once learned you cannot unlearn it.

What are your strengths and how would you describe Dolph in one sentence?
Entrepreneurial, positive, fun-loving, solution oriented, living life lightly, always in for jokes and sharing that with other people to help uplift others. Every person I make laugh is a win to me, as I help them to be happier and more positive. This makes me happy. Laughing is lighter energy than when a person is heavy with negative energy.


Do you have hobbies or interests that you are also passionate about?
My newest hobby is farming. The community of those involved in farming has grown a lot in Curaçao, syntropic farming and permaculture. I feel so happy when we work on a piece of land and transform 100 meter of land into a fertile land slot with herbs, vegetables and fruits, when you grow this with a lot of love and care within 6 weeks ago that we started with it.


If you as Dolph would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Mexico or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
I enjoy life, I love life.

Who are the persons that have inspired you the most in your life?
In every area of my life I have had masters and teachers. In all the areas of my life that I have been passionate about I have had my masters. My parents yes, I would like to mention them. In my camera work for example I once called someone in Hollywood to commend him of his work in a movie. He invited me to come to Hillywood and have a look at how he was doing his work. I have always been very thankful to these masters for they have taught and shared with me.

 

What is a trait that is still work in progress?
Patience.


What was a defining moment in your life?

Life itself.

 

Where do you want to be 15 to 20 years from now with your career?
I follow the path that most of us don’t travel. Depending from your cultural location this approach can give you so much inner peace. If you have grown up in duality you can’t see any else from that perspective. You have grown seeing the world as you were taught to. At times people ask me if the world is in balance and if there will be world peace. To me everything is in balance, always. For those taught to see the world in duality this is very hard to understand. It limits the understanding of wholeness that everything is connected to each other. There is neither good nor bad in a non-dual world.

 

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years from now?

One of the 250 Influencers of Curaçao
Dolphe van Stapele is a creative, spiritual, fun loving entrepreneur that recently started a wellness center – Ashram - in Curaçao at Fuik at the venue of Dinah Veeris. At a very young age Dolph was interested in the deeper existential questions of life and this personal spiritual quest made him focus on the inside of who he is. Finding one his other passions, that is camera work after leaving the Marines, he learned the camera work in Curaçao. While Dolph decided to stay and live in Curaçao, he kept the spiritual side of his life to the background for years as most people know him from his filmwork. For Dolphe, the Corona crisis made him changed and made him become more focused on the spiritual side of himself. The transition from mainly being actively involved in the Filming Industry is exciting for over 20 years, which btw he is not leaving for 100 %, but at the other hand his focus now on the Ashram is “mega” comforting as it offers him the mental and the physical peace, that he was longing for away from the rat race of the film industry. Able to know who he really is, with the Ashram he can now also offer Satsangs to people that attend the Ashram and by doing that he is helping others. Creating inner peace not only for himself, but also for those visiting the Ashram. For all these reason’s we dearly love and deeply respect Dolph and we consider him part of the 250 Influencers of the island representing the Spiritual and the Creative sector.


The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020
The goal of the Share2Uplift movement is to: “Identify 250 leaders from all walks of life to connect, align and create impactful changes in all walks of life, which includes intergenerational collaboration by the end of 2020.” We will use interviewing Influencers, meet-and-greet events, “train-the-trainers”-programs on “Emotional Mastery” and “Intentionality “as national intervention strategies, to reach this goal on top of our goal to scale up the possibilities to connect, align and create impact via a virtual platform. We believe that with collaborating with Miguel Goede on the virtual Vision 2030 platform, we will accelerate the possibilities to connect the diaspora and others elsewhere in the world and on the island willing to constructively create impactful changes in Curaçao, to join. Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.

 

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:

– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;

– Manage delivery of the vision;

– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

Influencers KREA: building Curaçao of the future



Could you introduce yourselves as you present yourself as a collective, not as individuals?
‘KREA’ is a collective of young engineers from Curaçao descent that teamed up and we present ourselves as a multi-disciplinary team. We collaborate together to help to create a futureproof and sustainable Curaçao. We consist of 6 members representing these disciplines: Information Technology, Built Environment, Energy & Sustainability, Transport & Mobility and Design & Interaction.

Why is it that you present yourself as a collective?
We became aware that there are possibilities to offer solutions for challenges that Curaçao is confronted with from different perspectives, disciplines and a multi-disciplinary approach.

 

Can you call this an integral approach?
Yes, you can see it as an integral approach. One can see Curaçao as a system, where each element is related to other elements. Via a multi-disciplinary approach, we are preventing to look at the (technological) challenges in Curaçao from a tunnel vision. What we do is, we combine the strengths of every individual, to be able to tackle a much larger challenge and come up with the most all-encompassing solutions for Curaçao and possibly also for the other islands.

 

Where all of you born in Curaçao and whom are members of KREA?
Yes, we were all born in Curaçao and this explains our desire to help in the progress of the island as we can see how much potential the island has.

Could you share something of your educational background and your experiences as a collective?
We are a diverse group of engineers with a master’s degree from the Delft University of Technology also known as TU Delft (some team members are currently graduating).

With regards to our experiences as a group, if you look at our specialism you can have an idea of our backgrounds. During our studies we met each other and in 2017 decided to come together to explore collaborations. We have met, had discussions in our spare time in the week-ends while we all had a busy life. Either finishing our studies or starting to work as professionals at Consultancy companies and during the past two years we have jointly written the vision document KREA 2069. In 2019 we launched KREA and since then we are writing articles, offering podcasts, interviewing professionals, offering multi-disciplinary solutions to trigger discussions and offering others the opportunity to also share the stage with us in reaching our vision for Curaçao. So, as we meet, jointly write articles and have podcasts; we offer to the wider audience a stage that we can co-share with each other’s technological solutions for the problems we address.


As you are engineers what is your opinion on STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) being introduced in schools in Curaçao?
Well, we fully agree with this concept especially when you look at our vision for the coming 50 years. We even belief that STEAM, and in our vision we used (computer) programming as an example, should not be taught at the secondary and tertiary education level only. We go even further. We believe that it should be taught at the primary school level as it is the new language just like we were taught languages at school. Our children and grandchildren should learn this at the earliest stage as possible.

 

 


 

You as KREA and collective Janchi, could you tell us more about the work you are doing, what are your goals and how are you going to achieve your goals?
We have our vision and our goals. Our goal is that we want to be a platform to increase the awareness of the possibilities that exist to bring the island back to where we want it to be or even further with our vision clear in mind.

We would like to trigger the notion in Curaçao that there exist solutions and things can be improved and made better.

At this moment the articles that we write, our podcasts and via our social media and website, we want to create more conservations and dialogues on things that can be done. At this moment in time we are having internal discussions on the answers to the “how to” questions, as we are also evolving into really wanting to do things, thinking about what projects can we implement, as a collective in collaboration with other partners in Curaçao.

What kind of projects are you aiming at?
We can consider for example a solar energy project on buildings or an electrical infrastructure project for cars or a “coding”-language that can be introduced at the primary schools level. We are being approached by different partners to identify possible collaboration on several projects. We are a multi-disciplinary team looking for multi-disciplinary projects, like the development of the city centre, Punda and Otrobanda. Not only the buildings and its architectural design but also the transport infrastructure within the city centre: we all know the parking discussions within the city centre and the effect it has on the accessibility and liveability of Punda, Otrabanda and its environment. And what about the stimulation of Smart Energy Grids and Smart Mobility and a good design of Information Architectures to support these Smart Systems where data plays an important role. Those are some of the things that one can think of. These are some multi-disciplinary technological projects but it could also entail collaboration with other disciplines like economy, finance, legal and social perspectives. One must see our technological improvements as a tool to reach socio-economic growth and a healthy financial system and with this a sustainable and future proof Curaçao.

 

 


Where does your interest come to create a vision with such a long-time span, 50 years?

Well in 2019 we launch our vision so it’s going to be a 50-year plan. We started by formulating where we want to go, where do we come from. We didn’t want to have a short-term vision. In our view a short-term vision will, at the end, not result in a sustainable Curacao. This was our starting point and now we are at the phase to answer what needs to be done in the coming 20, 30 or 40 years as our island is dealing with big challenges.

 


Are you also involved in specific projects in Curaçao, as in the end through actions one can achieve and manifest one’s vision in collaboration with others, right?
Yes, at this moment we are involved with parties/partners in Curaçao but it is now too premature to expand on this. But be assured that the moment we can share this to the greater public, we will do this.


Are you members of ABC Compas or what is your relationships with ABC Compas?
At this specific moment we aren’t members of ABC Compas. But 5 of the 6 members of KREA were active as Board- member of ABC Compas and 3 of them were Chairpersons in the past. So, we got acquainted with one another via ABC Compas before we got involved in KREA. So you can say that our relationship with ABC compas is very good. It is said that once you were part of ABC Compas  you will always be part of the family. We still know many students and we will consider to collaborate with them and contribute to ABC Compas student members that are in need for projects or to offer them a role as team members or as part of their internships.

 

 


What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now as a collective?
Deep down our BIG WHY is based on our passion for technology, we would like to propose solutions to the island’s challenges. But we are also influenced by the situation on the island, caused by the Corona virus Pandemic. There are lots of organizations that would love to offer help and we are one of these organizations. 


We would like to make Curaçao future proof by 2069 and even the years before that given our engineering backgrounds.
The biggest reason for us wanting this is, that we are descendants from the island, that have these big dreams and ambitions like more students and professionals to return back to the island after we have finalized our studies. Which turns out to be almost impossible for most of us because of lack of jobs, so we stay here in Holland and build our careers up here. If the situation on the island would change for the better, this will offer opportunities in the future for us and those generations after us to return back to Curaçao. However, we don’t want to wait until this moment to return and contribute. Some of us already returned!

 


When do you consider that you have been successful in your personal and business/professional life, let us say 5 to 10 years from now?

If parts of our vision 2069 would have been implemented. The year 2069 might see far from where we are now, but success in 5 to 10 years would be, if certain projects would have already been implemented in the meantime and that we could have contribute to these projects or even that we as KREA could dedicate more time in the realization of our vision 2069.

 

 


What are the challenges that you are dealing with? And how are you dealing with these different challenges you confront?
First of all 6 of us are very busy people with at the one hand our personal lives and at the other hand some are either in the final stages of their master degree or some just started with their careers and have very demanding jobs at consultancy companies. Secondly we still need to prioritize enough time to invest in KREA. We also have reached a cross road where we are answering the “How to”-questions. How are we going to implement our vision? Well, all of us have our own way to balance the time spend on personal, professional and KREA, but in the end we are be able to do this with the best intentions to help Curaçao.

 

Do you use your inner voices to evaluate when dilemma’s show up in the course of unfolding your strategies? How does that work for you?
We have this unique and distinct advantage that we know each other now for almost 8 years now. We have developed this bonding and this open transparent communication with each other that has been tested and proven. We meet on Saturdays and Sundays for several hours and we always reach a consensus. Open and transparent communication has been the most important factor. In this particular moment in time, let’s say since a couple of months now, we feel and sense that we should take the next step being: “Coming up with specific-projects or in other words answering the “How-to”-question”.

 

How are you trying to keep up with your personal knowledge and skills levels?
We interview people, experts in certain areas like recently the local architect Lyongo Juliana. We are open and respectful to acknowledge that we don’t know everything and that we can learn from others expertise and collaborate with other disciplines like sociology, finance, economy etc. it to work for a better future for Curaçao. We are not naive and we know that we can’t just copy paste and project solutions one-on-one having studied here in Holland given the local circumstances in Curaçao.
As professionals where some of us work, we get a lot of in-house training and this also helps to keep our knowledge and skills levels up.


What are your strengths as a collective?
As a multi-disciplinary team, all of us have this specific specialized knowledge. So, by bundling our efforts in a multi-disciplinary approach of our vision, we maximize our output. Going alone to change the world will not work, but standing shoulder to shoulder and address the challenges, we can achieve so much more.


Do you have hobbies or interests that you are also passionate about?

As the KREA most of us do a lot of reading, be it the newspapers, articles, books. This is a sort of hobby for us.

 

If you as KREA would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Mexico or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself as a collective, what would you answer?
We are a platform that is focusing on Curaçao. We want to enable the further development of a shared vison for the island via conversations, sharing of information and specific projects in the near future.

 

How would you describe KREA in one word or one sentence?
With our own name ‘KREA’ itself. In Papiamentu our native language krea means create. So, in our words ‘Create’ a better future for Curaçao.

 

Whom are the persons or organizations that have inspired you the most in your paths up to now?
First and foremost, ABC–compas has inspired us.
Furthermore, our own companies were some of us work as consultants. We see so many interesting projects that these companies are doing for other countries and/or international organizations and this has inspired us to ask the question “Why not do the same for Curaçao” and share this knowledge we gain with partners in Curaçao.


What was a defining moment in KREA’s life?
The moment we published our vision and went “live”. We started in 2017 and we have had regular meetings during 2 years, where we answered questions related what and how. The publication of the vision was a validation of the work we had done over the two years. We have had mostly positive reactions as we went “live” with our vision.

 

Where do you want to be 25 years from now with KREA?
We would love to be able to develop an organization, where we can put more time to work on projects on the island. That would be very nice. There is enough demand for our services, and we have so much that we can offer. If that would be the case, it would be like some validation of a need for further improvements on the island. That there is potential in this on Curaçao. That we made it happen.

 

What would you want the population of Curaçao to say about you as KREA let’s say 25 years from now?
Well we are now asking ourself if we would stay a platform or become much more, but that people on the island would approach us for their technological challenges or any other type of challenge. That we would have by then have a great reputation on the islands.

What would you want the population of Curaçao say about you as KREA let’s say in 2069?
They would say when they would be looking back at when we started in 2019, they would take notice that we not only achieved our vision, but that we achieved more than we expected to achieve in our vision 2069.

 

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of the islands, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao as we are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, recession and in the middle of growing environmental challenges because of the global warming consquences?
The potential of the island. Just one example, Curaçao has this unique geographical position, we can further develop it’s logistical and transport position as a hub for freight and passengers. Furthermore, our people are resilient, and we have so many super talents in different areas, we have people that have followed advanced studies in different foreign College and Universities. To us, it is just a matter of bundling of efforts and we can achieve much more and this will help make Curaçao future proof and sustainable, as we visualized in our KREA-vision.

We hope that as we take furthers stepsteps our initiatives for Curaçao would be welcomed. We would love to collaborate and that we would like to share to jointly have impact. Those interested can contact us.

KREA as a platform consists of a collective of enthusiastic, energetic and ambitious group of young engineers that based on a vision for Curacao for 2069 aim to co-create the “Curacao of the future”.
