Can you share something about your family background?
“I am a father and with my significant other Soraya, we have 2 wonderful daughters of which youngest, Solange, was born very recently. My father and mother are still alive and I was raised by my mother and my grandmother. I was born in Curaçao and I have 3 sisters and 1 brother.”

You were very involved in the Downtown Management Organization (DMO), there is where most people know you from and recently made a career switch and started as an entrepreneur, you are now an event organizer. What else do you do?
"
I have been organizing events for almost 20 years now, including the ones I did while I worked at DMO e.g. Punda Vibes, Ban Topa’s, and Noche De Kompras. So starting Enrich is the natural continuation of my passion to create concepts that bring people together and to build platforms to promote creative talent. Next to my own events, the objective of Enrich is to give creative support to other people’s dreams. In more practical terms, I add value to other people’s endeavors by developing concepts, by doing the marketing and by having the relevant experience and network to make these events/projects happen."

We have come to know you as a very dynamic, talented, entrepreneurial and optimistic person and in that sense you are an Influencer in our society since we met when you were director of DMO. What caught our attention was you someway somehow have re-oriented yourself and as an event organizer, you are involved with Kaya Kaya and The Lounge and I am not sure of other events. Whom are the other partners in Kaya Kaya and can you expand a little bit on what the goals are of this event as this event caught a lot of positive attention? How do you explain the success of this event?
"I think the positive reactions to Kaya Kaya come from our bottom up organic approach, although I have to say we were surprised by the amount of attention it generated as well. One of my Kaya Kaya partners, Kurt Schoop, has been involved in the development of Ser’i Otrobanda for over 10 years. He has been relentlessly working on building social cohesion and on beautification of the neighborhood. This laid a strong groundwork for our Kaya Kaya - event. Our other partner, Clayton Lasten, brings his business savvy and innovative way of thinking, to the table.

What helped is that we all bring a positive mindset and that we prefer doing over talking. With our motto “Leave it better behind” we have committed ourselves to achieve lasting improvements for the neighborhood and its inhabitants. And you know, the inhabitants were more than willing to collaborate with us on this. During the preparations of the venue for the Kaya Kaya- event, for example, they helped us with the beautification of the area by painting their houses and with the clean-up. The inhabitants also actively participated as food vendors, and supported us with the production of the street party. Another aspect of Kaya Kaya is that we’re able to create a platform to showcase our talented local artists. We are very grateful that so many people supported our events. This surely motivates us to continue with this concept going forward."

As an event organizer you need to be very connected and be very able to deal with different types of personalities. In that sense you are influencing a lot of people in a good sense because Kaya Kaya was also a community building project. When did you start getting interested in becoming an entrepreneur? Where does it come from? This question makes me reflect way back to when I was living and studying in Rotterdam in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. When I was in my mid-twenties, I noticed that parties with the music genres Hip Hop, R&B, (Neo) Soul and dancehall were mostly on the outskirts venues of the city and the crowd was not as mixed as it is nowadays. I wanted to bring change to that. During that time, Rotterdam was the cultural capital of Europe. The city council stimulated creative hubs, for example by promoting the use of empty buildings as an incubator for creative talent. As an island boy, I walked around in awe of all that was happening there at the time. After helping other people on their projects, I decided to throw my 25th birthday party in an old abandoned insurance building downtown Rotterdam. We had the top-floor of the building full with open-minded people from all kinds of racial and social backgrounds and we had a great time! Fueled by this, I took the leap and together with a group of friends started throwing events commercially. Every few months we had up to 1000 – 1500 guests that came to our events in different venues in Rotterdam, usually in the OffCorso.
I still love bringing people together and let them have a good time, while also providing a platform to hone the skills of young musicians, DJ’s and other talents. So when I moved back to Curaçao , one of the first concepts I developed was Groove Lounge. Groove Lounge brings my friends and the friends of my friends together for a hip-hop/R&B/Eclectic party that hosts some of the best DJ’s of the island. We celebrated our 10-year anniversary last November. We all got older and many of us need to arrange a babysitter or recuperate for a couple of days after the party now, but I’m happy to say that the vibe was still there.

I sometimes jokingly say, that I’m in the ‘memory creation’ business. I hope that people who visit my events take the positive memories and connections they made during the event with them in other aspects of their lives as well."

Are you a full-time entrepreneur?
"Yes, I am doing this full time now. So next to the organization of my own events, I provide creative support for other people and also coach other entrepreneurs in the implementation, marketing and branding of their businesses."

Where does your drive comes from? What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
"When is I was a kid I used to play a lot with Lego building cities and also spend time drawing imaginary countries on a A4 paper. Back in those days there was no SIMS computer game. By living and actively participating in the social growth of Rotterdam I’ve noticed that what truly interest me is ‘creating stages’ for positive change, especially in an urban environment. In short, I just feel an urge to create and to see things improve. When you know me, you know I’m someone that has a lot of energy and has a hard time to sit still."

In what ways are you trying to keep up with your skills?
"Mostly by researching the internet on topics that I need to learn more about. Perhaps even more important is that I regularly hit the streets to connect with people in my branch so I can experience what’s going on." 

As an entrepreneur, you should possess lots of courage, you do this easily. Where does this come from?
"Who said it was easy? We all have days that it is not easy to get up or face a challenge, and that’s ok. As long as I’m making steps, as tiny as they may be, I get there eventually while enjoying the journey."

What are your other strengths?

"I can visualize how I want to experience an event and then work back from that to make it happen. In other words, I can “visualize to realize”. I also thrive under pressure and am highly adaptable to change, which comes in handy as an event organizer."

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about?
"When I was young, I loved playing with Lego. Now I share that hobby with my four-year old daughter Jazmine. We are building an awesome Lego city together, even with her Elsa and Moana and other Disney Lego’s that seem to keep appearing. Besides my family, I love sports, basketball especially. Next to watching the games, I’m interested in the ways teams function, the plays behind the scenes and the development of talents. I also like learning about city development and the history of the world, especially why and how things have happened."

If you as Raygen, would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
"Hey, I am Raygen. Where is the party at?"


How do you see the future of Willemstad?

"The best way to predict the future is to create it. Willemstad has a hardware and a software side. The hardware consists of its buildings, its harbor, its streets and its parks. The software part is what I love to do, by giving the hardware “taste” with the right events and encourage a good mix of functions, so that people like to visit the area and feel connected to it. There are currently many developments in the Willemstad area that runs from “Bapor Kibra” to “Piscadera”. I am optimistic that with continued focus and effort, we can make great improvements in that area in the short term."

Someone once told me that “Curaçao is the island of the future, and it will always be that way”. This triggers me, because I refuse to believe that we cannot achieve better things for our island. I prefer to think that the best way to predict the future is to create it ourselves. This is absolutely possible. We have so many creative and capable people on this island.

Do you have another subject matter that you are passionate about?
"
Another subject I naturally gravitate towards has to do with youth. During my time at Luna Blou, together with Angela Roe, we brought young talent together to guide them and to give them a stage through the Luna Yen Open Podium event. In a broader sense, we need to hone the skills of our youth, for example through better education and afterschool programs. Not only for their own development, but for the development of our community as well. Currently, we are not doing that sufficiently, at least not in a way that is feasible for people with lower incomes."

How would you describe Raygen in one word or one sentence?
“Chill, but also intense, with a perspective of going forward and making things happen."

Who is a positive role model in your life?
“My mother. She had me when she was 15 years old. Nonetheless, she raised me and started her own company. She is very good in what she does. I’m really proud of her and hope to have inherited some of her determination and strength."

What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, defining moment that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strengths and turned out to be a blessing?
"
That was back in Rotterdam, when I decided to come back to Curaçao . I was still organizing events, but noticed that times had changed. Friends moved away, had babies, my relationship ended, and my events were less successful. After some self-reflection, and a good talk with my mother, I came to the conclusion that the cheese that I’ve been eating had moved and I decided it was time to come back to Curaçao .

My time in Rotterdam taught me how to be an active participant in a time that the city was booming. I took this mindset back with me when I came back to Curaçao in 2005. I gave myself 10 years to prove to myself that I could be successful in bringing together city development, culture, night life, youth and art. Those 10 years have passed already, and I am happy to see the results of the projects that I was able to work on and I’m now blessed to be involved in Kaya Kaya.

Where do you want to be 10 years from now?
"A couple of years ago, I stood at the Plaza Fort outlook at the Punda side of the harbor enjoying the view with an American that comes regularly to the island. Standing there the American said: “Curaçao is the most developed underdeveloped island I have seen in the Caribbean”. In my opinion he nailed that remark. We have one of the most beautiful Islands in the world and an UNESCO World Heritage city full of potential. But still we haven’t succeeded harnessing its social, physical and economic power.

In 10 years’ time I’d like to stand on that same spot, look out on the city and enjoy how far we have come.

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 30 years from now?
“He did it his way.”

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao ?
"
We have everything that is needed to make the island thrive. I meet and work with a lot of young people that are focused on making their communities better. Overall, we just need to be more critical of ourselves, not by bashing one another or by pointing fingers, but by setting higher expectations for ourselves and the people around us."

Do you want to share anything else that might be relevant for those reading this blog?
"Well, one last thing I will say: be careful what you wish for because you can be overwhelmed with opportunities. The question you have to ask yourself is when to say “Yes” and when to say “No”. I’m still learning to say “no” to myself and I’m hopefully getting there soon, because by saying “yes” on too many opportunities, can overwhelm and stray you from the path to reach your goals. What I’m learning myself is to work together and to share opportunities, considering that one person can’t do everything in one lifetime. By sharing, others can take on the opportunities as well and together we can make the pie called “Curaçao ” bigger and more fruitful for all."

This goal has only been partially met. We now want to reach this goal by the end of 2020.

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:
– Create an inspiring vision of the future;
– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;
– Manage delivery of the vision;
– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.
These criteria are now being polished.

We also consider these 5 values of the most important ones for Share2Uplift aligners. They are:
• Peace from within;
• Compassion;
• Respectfulness;
• Integrity;
• Responsibility.

As we will progress towards this goal we will update you on the progress.

Tamira La Cruz: a bridge-builder, diverse and global

Tamira could you share with us some of your family back ground?
“My name is Tamira La Cruz, I was born in Curaçao and I have one brother Marco and a very large and dear extended family in Curaçao, the Netherlands, the US and the Dominican Republic. My parents are still alive and have been very supportive in my career. “

Have you ever worked for an employer?

“Yes, I worked for Maduro & Curiel's Bank (MCB) for 4 years at the start of my career. I received a scholarship from them. We have maintained in contact over the years especially with Ron Gomes Casseres and we try to connect and talk to one another every 90 days. About three years ago I went through a transformational phase re-inventing my “niche” as a professional and I am grateful for having been able to talk with him. Ron is a kind of an accountability partner for me and on top of that his more experienced and analytical mind and his quick answers to my questions, where only a few words are enough, that challenges me. There is wisdom in age.“

How long have you now been an entrepreneur and what are the services that you offer to your clients?
“Since 1995 I am offering two things to companies. MarkStra Caribbean helps companies grow their market and therefore their company by looking into new opportunities and help them turn this into reality. Nowadays, most of my clients are international clients; they have a larger business strategy and research system. In the last three years, I diversified from private sector clients to also multi -lateral international agencies that give advice to governments. We help economies and the companies within them to become more competitive, innovative and more export oriented. I also work as an export coach for the Kingdom of the Netherlands.”


When we first met, you were a member of Rotary Club, so you are in that sense also giving to the society.
“I am fortunate as a person, first of all to have the parents that I have. When I was 14 years old back in 1979 and I read in the magazine Seventeen that there was a summer camp in New York I really dearly wanted to go to this summer camp. I am grateful my parents’ courage, because at the age of 14 years, they put me on an airplane and I went to New York. This was 40 years ago in New York and the USA, where just some years after the abolishment of the segregation and only 11 years after Martin Luther King had been murdered. They never took me to Disney World, but they had a lot of courage to send their 14 year old daughter to a summer camp in New York. It was life-changing.

I was also fortunate to get a scholarship from MCB to attend Boston University, after I finalized my secondary school. In that sense MCB recognized my talents, which our system doesn’t necessarily do. I later got my MBA from to the Wharton College in the USA... I did an exchange at IESE Business School in Barcelona, worked in Chile (still under a dictatorship) and volunteered in Colombia and Guatemala (both with internal strife). Al these experiences were life-changing.

I appreciate this so much that I am now, as we speak today, very passionate about offering young adolescents (16 to 17 years old) the opportunity to go to exchange programs, or participate in any international opportunity available to them. I consider it a way to pay it forward.”


What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
“I try to pay it forward what I got and I am passionate about that. “

You are trying also to keep up with your skills?

“I do lots of reading, always with a special focus on companies and international agencies, their methodology, identifying best practices. I love meeting new people, new behaviors and new ways of looking at things."

I have always perceived you as an opinionated woman and you are not a shy person, right?
“I try to speak based on data, logic and evidence based. It sometimes comes across as ‘critical’.”





We have heard that you are very innovative in what you do, where does that come from?

“In Curaçao, for historic reasons, we value and listen to opinions of professionals working in rather conservative sectors like accountancy, lawyers, tax lawyers, civil servants. They are wired to think in terms of ‘maintaining what there is’ and to ‘group think’. In my profession, I am constantly looking for new developments and opportunities and see if I can create value for my clients. And after doing this for over 30 years, adding international insights, it becomes ‘automatic’ and I have gotten increasingly better at it. This skill stands out as unique amid the sea of conventional thinking, based on the same premise, in Curaçao. Working outside of Curaçao, I also realized that we can be more transparent, opening opportunities for people with different expertise. To me it is obvious that people with my mindset are not valued.“

What are your other strengths?
“I have always been ‘the bridge’, everywhere I am, and also in Curaçao.”


Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about?

“I am very much involved in organic perma culture and natural farming. I lived in Spain in 1993 and saw that they were growing things in a very arid climate comparable with Curaçao. This inspired me. So after I came to Curaçao and I talked to my father to join me in setting up a project. He said: ‘Go read this book first’. After some ‘debate’ and hesitancy I did read the book and have been reading and experimenting with organic gardening ever since. I am now also on the board of Soltuna, Agricultural Marketing Foundation.”

If you as Tamira would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“That is tough; I would ask them first about themselves and then tell them that part about myself that fits the conversation and context.“


How would you describe Tamira in one word or one sentence?
“A bridge, diverse and global.”





Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
“My mother is the daughter of immigrants and an extremely very pro-active woman. When she was 28 years old she started the first club for women in Curaçao back in 1963 by passing the articles of law at a notary to formalize it, during a time when woman couldn’t even sign certain legal documents. She is a big role model for me. My father used to be a civil servant, but still had lots of initiatives like he started a chicken farm back in 1970-ies and later sold it. When I met the new owner some time ago he told me that this farm, when he bought is, was way ahead of its time and still is. So both my parents are out of box thinkers, way ahead of their time. I respect them dearly.
Ron Gomes Casseres as my former boss and also Orlando Cuales. I worked for Radio Curom Z-86 when he started to localize radio and transformed radio in Curaçao in the beginning of the eighties. I think both are 20 years older than I. I have a few more mentors of that same age difference. It’s the sweet spot, I think.”

What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strengths?
“I am a business economist by profession and when I came back I started my company in 1995. Although I was helping companies in their growth strategy as part of their marketing strategy, many people thought I was doing the creative and design part of it. That is why I started 10 years ago to re-positioning myself to a business strategist and am now a recognized economic and private sector development expert for SIDS. It took a lot of effort because Curaçao is not known by multilateral agencies or countries for economic development programs and experts, and because my experience on the national policy level in Curaçao was and continues to be limited. It is often required to ‘break through’ internationally. I cannot tell you how many times I got rejected in Curaçao, for the simplest things. However, I had invested in acquiring current knowledge about competitiveness (Global Competitiveness Index) and red carpet (World Bank Doing Business), both of which proved to be perfectly timed. I am, after all, well-versed in finding new opportunities and building bridges. All the work I have done in economic development is with international consulting agencies because I built the bridge.The lessons learned: invest, be more responsive than your competitors, show off your uniqueness and diversity.“

What was a defining moment in your life, a setback that later turned out to be a great blessing?

“When my significant other died 2,5 years ago. I started to look at things differently because I received a warm bath of empathy not only from friends, but also from relative strangers because I could sense their humanity. I became more empathic and I now deliberately connect with people on a different level now. Also, I deliberately try to be ‘diplomatic’. I omit and delete phrases, word choices, that are unnecessarily suggestive. That was a great lesson."

Where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now with your businesses?
“Retired.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 25 years from now?
“She lived her life and she was fortunate to have a great one.”

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao?
“We still have great areas of strength to uncover and to learn to put to use to the growth of our country. If all had been discovered and uncovered, there would be no way forward. I also know that we still have Spirit to fight. I wrote that article ‘A dozen and four reasons to choose Curaçao for business’ a few weeks ago. It was published by several local papers to coincide with the BB4B Forum (Bon Bini for Business). The greatest reward was how Yu Di Kòrsou reacted. It gave everybody a much-needed ‘aliento’. I realized we were not emotionless about our country and circumstance. That is a great thing!”

Do you want to share anything else that might be relevant for those reading this blog?
“We need to appreciate whom we are and not “waltz over” our diversity that has created whom we are on this moment in time, but recognize this as our strength that adds value to our country.”

Vicky Trinidad: a sunshine, dynamic and all round


Vicky, we have heard from people, that you are a very dynamic, talented and a driven person.
Can you share with us some of your family back ground?
“I was born in Curaçao and the rest is a little bit complicated and a long story. I grew up with my aunt since I was 6 months old. This aunt is the sister of my father and I call her my Mom, because she is my mommy (Iris Trinidad). My biological mother went to live in Holland and my father went a little later to Holland and they were already separated. Both of them, I didn’t hear or see a lot of them.My biological mom uses to send me cards, one of my birthdays and one on Christmas. She did this till I was 13 years old. But I never had an address or a phone number of her. I don’t know so much about my biological mom. I know from my father’s family that I have 2 sisters and one brother.“

But you know, I am very fortunate because I grew up never feeling that I missed anything until I was an adolescent, I started asking questions about why “this” and why “that” about my biological mother. There are two words that I almost never use: “Hate and dumb”. I don’t judge people and therefore don’t judge her. She must have had her reasons and I don’t blame her for not being involved in my education and my life when I grew up. I’m not the one to judge. I wasn’t there and I could never walk in her shoes to know why she never took care of me. So, there is also nothing to forgive. When she made her a choice, at that time, I guess that was the best choice for her to make. You will never know what that someone was feeling when they took their decision.

I met my older brother by coincidence, when I was 15 years old and once I lived in Holland I went out and looked for my biological mother, curious to know whom she was and to find out if I looked like her or something. In October 1997, I finally met her. And it turned out that I had another brother, younger than me. So, I finally came to understand that I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters, from different fathers and “it is like it is”. I love them all and I talk to them all. My Mom (Iris) was and still is very supportive and so is the rest of the family here in Curaçao, but also in Holland. Whenever I have a crazy idea my mom gets a heart attack first and then she sees why I’m so excited. And together we talk about the options. My sister Jo-Ann in Holland, is my Number One fan, she always tells me, how much she admires me. I have a boyfriend now for almost 4 years and he supports me in my craziness and my hectic live and work. And his family too He even comes up with ideas for me”.

You have studied and worked in Holland, right?
“I went to Holland in 1997 when I was 20 years old. I went to study Ergotherapy, but ended up studying “Sociaal Pedagogische Hulpverlening” with a certificate in “Ambulante en Medische Zorg” because Ergotherapy had a lottery system which I missed. I also combined this with a Sociaal Juridische Dienstverlening. In those days, I wanted to look good and show to the world that I could handle two Majors. But you know that didn’t work out at first because especially after I became sick for 4 to 5 months, I changed my plans. I went to work for a Telecommunication and Technological firm. And I was challenged after being hired as a telephone operator after two months when the secretary of the director asked me to help them out with his PowerPoint presentation which I have mentioned on my CV that I have mastered. Which in those days was still very unique. But, I didn’t master this as well as they thought I did, but my boyfriend then, he is computer whiz kid, helped me out on the phone and after two days I delivered and the director was very happy with what I did with his PowerPoint presentation.”

Does this typifies whom you are, not afraid from the unknown and challenge, having courage?
"Yes, for sure. Because after, that they offered me, after working there for some time, to work for them for an indefinite time, but I decided to go back to school and finish my studies, because I thought I would look good in the eyes of others. Btw I don’t do this anymore, pleasing others. If and when I say “no” it is a “no”. But back then in my early 20-ties, I was like that. “

You used to work for SSC as a mentor?
“Yes, I started in 2004 and stopped in 2011. I loved working there because helping others, especially students to get their education in the best of possible ways gave me great satisfaction. When I left to Holland for my advanced education, I went without any mentoring. And I met a lot of other students those days all complaining about the mentoring via SSC. So, I decided why not help out by giving a helping hand as a mentor. “

Where did that caring for others come from?
“Well, my Mom is a dedicated and caring schoolteacher and she always worked to let her students become the best they can be, giving extra curriculum during schooltime and in the afterschool hours. So, she empowered them and never left a child behind. I was fortunate enough to have her as a mother, so she inspired me and that explains how I am. In a sense, it is “monkey see, monkey do”. You know when I go around with my mother these days, we meet ex-students and their parents and they still express their appreciation for how my mother had impacted them when they were a student.”

You decided to come back to Curaçao although your future was unsure? When did you come back?

Since 2012 I was planning to come back. In the year 2011 one of my best friends, Vaneska Vis, a colleague at SSC, decided to move to Bonaire. And then my Sister Jo-Ann also left in January 2013 to live in Bonaire too. We used to live together in a big house I bought. So, when they started to leave Holland, I myself started to think about coming back to Curaçao. I sold my house and with the intention to save more money. What happened at that time is that I got sick in the beginning of January 2014, I had Breast Cancer stage 3. Another long story. The best thing is: My mom came to Holland and stayed with me till the end of my treatment. So, I decided to stay longer in Holland because Health Care is somewhat better than Curaçao. The thought to coming back still in the back of my mind.

By the beginning of 2016 I started to look for jobs and in February 2017 I packed my bags and I was back in Curaçao on 21st of March 2017. Life is short. And after having survived Cancer you really know that life is. That I’m here telling you this, is a miracle of sorts. So, when you get an opportunity to do something, do it. Because tomorrow you might not be here. I missed my family so much and my Mom is getting older. The other thing was that my boyfriend was also in Curaçao. So, the question was, Why not?!"


Your are project leader of CURA DOET and in that sense involved in making lots of volunteer work possible. Would you explain to us what your work is all about? How many full timers and part timers are involved in your overall work?
“I have one of the best jobs. Because I haven’t had a day that I wake up and say: I don’t want to go to work. When you love your job, it doesn’t feel like working. From filling all forms to get the “subsidie” till completing the project is my job. Curaçao Cares Foundation is the main Foundation and CURA DOET is one of the projects we have. We try to connect NGO, Companies and Volunteering together. CURA DOET is the biggest volunteering Action on Curaçao with 6.500 people volunteering. The job gives me a great feeling. Grateful to see every project crystalizing and all those happy smiles. We 4 now working together with 1 super intern. We all work freelance. We all have our own company. Beside us, we have a great board who supports as all the way. I can say I have learn from the best, Janis Vinck.

It is fun to have all those different types of contacts, their stories, my colleagues, my office hours that are not 9 to 5 working hours. You know a job title is not my thing. When I came to Curaçao I started to spread my CV around among friends and people I knew, visited network opportunities. I took a job in helping organize Carifta as volunteer, I was motivated to help Curaçao strengthen its reputation for being able to offer a good organization of the Carifta games, but for me it was also an opportunity to network and to showcase my skills. So, as I don’t belief in formal application procedures, this was an excellent opportunity to show to people what I was made off. I was also helping ACECollege (offering MBO and HBO-education) in 2017 with their rooster, teaching some classes and helping out in their afterschool programs and helping SOAW in writing project-documents, tools and curriculum for youth. But the main thing, my strategy to show case my skills worked perfectly because in July 2017 Curaçao Cares Foundation approached me for the first time and then by the 1st of October 2017 I was called again and offered the job as project leader of CURA DOET as the budget for SOAW dried out and in a sense, I considered this to be a present from heaven. I gradually stopped my work for ACE college in December 2017. But I still do some side jobs like in 2018, I also worked for a medical specialist from Colombia as a side job. He is applying Stem Cell Therapy, but I quit at the end of the year.

I am the secretary in the board of Curaçao Zoo and vice president for the Football Federation UNDEBA. It’s my way of giving back to the community. Beside this I’m an Education Consultant at Bircham University. I have my own foundation call Stichting Exprys and in my free time I help other to write projects. I have a lot of ideas and hope I can do a lot for my community."


What are the outcomes that you are aiming for CURA DOET?

“Last year I aimed for 225 volunteer projects and we ended having 250 projects and we ultimately ended up with 303. This year 2019, I aiming for 310. Why? It is great to expand and grow but you have to keep the quality of the projects in mind. But we already have over the 330 projects. We know that the overall awareness on the island is growing, but the way projects are handled and how volunteers are managed in the interpersonal relationships area, also needs to mature. Another thing is they need to be there for each other and we need to learn that we don’t need to wait until Christmas to start the preparation and caring for each other, they can work on the preparations during the whole year. We need to learn and feel how nice it is to do something for somebody else. Through radio, television, Facebook and Instagram we are going to promote this. If you are not the focal point but others, you will benefit anyway.”

What kind of activities are you supporting?

“It’s a little too much to answer. It’s from diving with turtles and clean part of the ocean around Curaçao, Cleaning up the beaches, Helping schools with painting their school or classroom, going out with the elders, taking care of the homeless, touch up kindergardens, Helping the zoo, Scoutingclubs, helping Sport federation to maintaining their “facilities”, painting with autistic children, taking care of our Archeology etc.

What are the challenges of the volunteer organizations?
"I would say to be open to meet other new people and to deal with the financial limitations and create something creative with it."

How do you experience the willingness of people to be involved as volunteer?
“Well I can say that a lot of my friends and my family are helping. Before they were like: why should I, because they thinking they have a lot to do at their own home, so why helping others. The minute I explain the benefits to them and they get in touch with others and hear their story, they change. And this is what happens to others. 

I am a connector, it is about give and take and be aware that you are not the center of the world the whole day and I am very aware of that.

I always say: No matter what happens is life, you need someone or you WILL need someone to help you. Today is their turn, tomorrow is yours. Money is not everthing in life. Lifting others up and helping other is best way to show that you care and that you don’t expect anything in return.

Can you explain your relationship with Curaçao Cares? And with the donor funds supporting CURA DOET?

Reda Sosial supports us in Curaçao. And from Holland Oranje Fonds. In Holland you have NL Doet, and so all the other island participates. It’s a Koningrijks ding. Union. The greatest thing is that it happened on 2 day on all 6 island and Holland. In 2 days more than 300 projects are being help. CURA DOET 2019 is on 15th and 16th of march.


What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
“To be a better person and to be a better me every day. To be a useful person. Last year I found an old Friends-Book and way back in those days, I was already thinking and feeling that I wanted to be a useful person for my community. I didn’t wright that I wanted to be an advocate or a doctor or accountant. I just wanted to be useful for others, helping others. And It is exactly what I still love to do and doing it. I got this from my Mom. She is always ready to help someone. Look what she did for me when I was a baby. She was young, wasn’t marry and she could have travelled the world but instead of that, she chooses to take care of me. And time after time I have seen how she did this for the family. My role model.
I love to wake up and see myself happy, feeling and knowing that I did a great deed and someone is overly happy because I help them. I love what I see in the mirror. They are no problems, I see solutions.”

How do you keep your skills up to date? 
“I like to read books. Nowadays these are E-books. I like to read about the human being. Why we act like this? Why we think like this? The psychology part of it and the dynamics between people is so interesting. My skills? I'm sometimes terrified of myself, because I can easy do something I never did before and learn it easily. I’m a very quick learner. And that is why my job must be interesting, because for me the money is not everything. I can’t see myself in that office from 9 to 5. I like to see movies and documentaries. It doesn’t matter in which language, as long as they have a subtitle. In Curaçao I haven’t follow any courses yet, but when I was in Holland I went to too many of them. I love meeting people. I invest first I my family, friends and I love to network and share with them my ideas. “

What are your strengths?
“I can see the positive sight of something easily while others will not see this;
I can talk easily to a stranger and maintain an interesting and entertaining conversation
I love to challenge myself;
I can organize like nobody else can;
I easily motivate others and I have great sense of humor.”

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about apart from singing?
“How did you know about my singing? Well, I am not singing anymore these days. I used to be in the M.I.L.-choir when I was going through my secondary educational education with Tania Cross, I used to sing in the church choir. I use to love singing in a group not solo, but never aiming to make a career out of it like Tania Kross and other singers famous singers too and I used to sing in the church choir. I use to love singing in a group not solo but not to make it a career out of it like others has made it; it was not my ambition. I love to dance, but lately I am not going out so much; I love the theater and “theater sport” . I did have my own group in Holland: A-Talents.I love photography; I love watching movies and series. And I am a motivational speaker.
Btw, I will write a book before I turn 45 years old. I already know the title of this book: “Greetings from Penstraat”, that is where I was born.“


If you as Vicky, would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“Easy: I would answer…Hi. I’m Vicky. What brings you here? Where are you travelling to? I love doing lots of things, but people call me sunshine, dynamic, multi-functional, an octopus, “WOW” and connected.”

How would you describe Vicky in one word or one sentence?
“Dynamic or a sunshine, but it is not easy because I am so much more than just one word. One will never know me by just describing whom I am in just one word.“

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?

“My Mom, my Sister Jo-Ann whom is now back in Holland for her advanced studies in Psychology. There are so many. You know I’ve seen a lot and I’ve spoken with so many inspiring people and everyone has touch me. I’ve had a lot of interesting works like working as a Social Working with Prostitutes and in a Psychiatric Clinic, close- setting. So, all my clients or patients tells their story and every story made me think. Sounds Cliché, but so it is.”

Where they always positive role models or where their also negative role models that you didn’t want to identify with?
“My way of thinking is this and how I feel is this: Everyone who crossed my path has taught me something. My friends are my friends, because I look up to them. They have supported me through hell and backed me. I have with every one of them, a different relationship. This is also true for every person that I ever met. There are some unforgettable moments. There are other less “pleasant” moments. But, my “number one”- role model is my mom. I look up to her how she took care of me (she was 28 years old when she decided to do this) and she was always by my side. She is just a great example of how a good woman should be and how an unconditional mom as a person can be. And because of her, bad models are just lessons learned.“

What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strengths?
"• Fighting and beating Cancer;
• Another moment was when I started doubting in myself during the time that I was for 1,5 year unemployed. I became depressed at last because of the overwhelming financial challenges I had;
• When I decided to be single, just to get to know myself better. And I can tell you that I am my best company, when I am alone. Me, myself and I. Me-time offers me the opportunity to do the things that I want to, like going to the movies when every else calls it off, I will go to the movies. I consider my freedom of choices as something very important;
• Fighting my thyroids hormone issues and accepting myself as I am. But because of all of this, I have grown to be the person I am now.

Whatever happens is life: Life will go on with or without you. You have to stand up, dust the dust off and keep going forward. When you hit the bottom, you can only go up. My logic is not yours. My quote: Despite how open, peaceful and loving you attempt to be, people can only meet you as deep as they have met themselves (think about it).”

What was a defining moment in your life, a setback that later turned out to be a great blessing?
A defining moment was the period I was depressed. Those were 1,5 frustrating years. I bought a house in 2006 and even went to Curaçao in December 2006 to celebrate and then in February 2007 I was laid off based on the LIFO principle, Last in first out, from De Haagse Hoge School. Everywhere I applied for work I was considered overly qualified. The economic recession during those days hit its peak. The main reason I got so depressed was I was unable to oversee a solution for my financial challenges of paying my mortgage and fixed monthly payments in the end running arrears and I couldn’t see the end of the tunnel, until via a psycho therapist and a financial advisor after recognizing that I had an issue we finally were able to get back on track. During those days, the help I got from my sister and friends was so important for me to get back on track. I am eternally grateful for the help I got. My sister and a friend finally moved in my house and the worst was over by 2010. But I renewed my talents and I learned that I can stumble, get to the bottom and come up back.
I think It was a lesson to learn so it prepared me for the Cancer-period.I believe that things happen for a reason and there are no coincidences in life!”

Where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now with your business(es)?
“Happy, in good health so to keep helping others. I already have my company and foundation. I’ve learned not to plan too much. I don’t even know If I will still here. So, I live my life happy, graceful, grateful and there are always things on my path to do.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 30 years from now?
“She was good!!!! She was happy!”

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao?
“I think I see Curaçao in a totally different way than others. I see possibilities every step I make. There is so much to do. I don’t want to be rich, I want health and help others to realize a lot of projects so I can help my community. If we keep on waiting for things to happened, it will never happen. Go out and change it. A small act can change the world. Stop playing the victim and do something for you Island.”

Do you want to share anything else that might be relevant for those reading this blog?

“We have to stop thinking in boxes and categorize everything and put it in a box. If you keep thinking this way, you will never think out of the box and see out the box and appreciate how beautiful it is. You will only see problems. Life is a challenge, but it is a beautiful challenge.

As the core group of Share2Uplift we love and deeply respect Vicky Trinidad, whom is influencing our NGO sector as an Influencer and a very dynamic project leader of CURA DOET. We definitely consider her one of the 250 ethical leaders of our Island, that continuously works at influencing people’s mindsets in our society. We will definitely continue to hear from her in the future.

The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020

As the Share2Uplift movement our goal for 2018 has been to identify 250 ethical leaders (Influencers) to be empowered by 21st century mindsets and are connected and collaborate with one another to create value for the whole of the society. This goal has only been partially met. We now want to reach this goal by the end of 2020.
Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:
– Create an inspiring vision of the future;
– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;
– Manage delivery of the vision;
– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.
These criteria are now being polished.

We also consider these 5 values of the most important ones for Share2Uplift aligners. They are:
• Peace from within;
• Compassion;
• Respectfulness;
• Integrity;
• Responsibility.
As we will progress towards this goal we will update you on the progress.

Gilbert Martina: humble, reliable, ethical and warm



Gilbert we have come to know you as a very dynamic, ethical person and Influencer in our society. Could you sharte something about your family?
“I was born in Curaçao and I have one sister and one brother. I am a father of two sons and my parents are still alive, my partner has two daughters and one son, so I have a family of 5 children.

I have lived, worked and made my career in Holland becoming a program manager of an insurance company Delta Lloyd in Holland for 3 years for large changemanagement programs, but I decided to come to live back in Curaçao where I started as Managing Director for Ennia Health Insurances (Amerfoortse: 2003 - 2006), Chief Operations Officer at Ennia Insurance (2006 – 2013) and Senior Managing Director Ennia Insurance (2013 – June 2017) for 14 years. As of february 2018, I became director of HNO (Hospital Nobo Otrobanda) and we are now going through the most decisive phase of transition these first months in 2019.

I am also the President of the Supervisory Board of Refineria di Curaçao in one of the most deciding phases of the history of the refinery in Curaçao.

As such my responsibilities are huge, but I believe I'm very capable and prepared to deal with these challenges, because all of my past experiences have prepared me for this moment in time.”

You are of the opinion, that you can master your own destiny and should not wait for things to fall in your lap. By deciding to be like this, it also means working long hours at times. Where did that come from?
“My mother and grandmother always told us that work will not kill you and that if you love what you do, you will not work for one day in your life. So do everything with passion and love.”


You like reading books, watching motivational YouTubes and you love meeting different kinds of people, you are very active meditator and this gives you a lot of mental peace. Would you like to expand on this, why are you so opinionated about this?
“We all are human beings and a human being has two parts, a human part (mind) and a being part (soul). The human part is relative, it has a beginning and an end (birth and dead), but the being part (soul) is absolute, it is eternal. Where as the human part is fed by tangible / material things, the soul needs only 3 things which are not tanglible being: FAITH, LOVE AND COMPASSION.

Meditation helps to foster and grow our soul which will increase our consiousness and decrease the influence of the mind, that becomes isolated (EGO). The ego never has enough, but if what you have today doesn’t satisfy you, what you will have tomorrow will not satisfy you neither, happiness isn’t an experience (external driven), but an internal state. The main hope of a nation lies in the proper education of it’s youth, that’s why it is essential to educate and develop not only the objective intelligence (math, reading, etc) of our youth and all human beings, but more importantly also the subjective intelligence being the consiousness. Intelligence without consiousness is a menace to every society."

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about?
“Yes, family and friends, cooking, soccer, traveling and get in touch with different cultures, nature, the ocean and spiritualism. I am also trying also to keep up with my skills and I enable others to grow. In that sense I am also a people’s manager and a servant leader.”

You are an abled communicator, you can connect with people and you can connect dots and align as part of a deliberate effort, right?
“Yes, I can, I see myself as an “builder of bridges” connecting people to make a difference for the good of all. That’s is always my objective, the general interest thus the good of all.”

If you as Gilbert would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“Hello, I’m Gilbert Martina, I would like to know what their purpose is an human being and afterward I will tell them about my purpose, which is to help and serve and how we can help each other.”

How would you describe Gilberto in one word or one sentence?
“A humble, reliable, ethical and warm person.”

Your leadership capacities are obvious, but where did this come from?
“I would say a gift from our dear Lord.”

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
“My mother, Nelson Mandela, Ghandi, Barak Obama, Denzel Washington, Mother Teressa. Yes, Denzel Washington also inspires me.”

Where they always positive role models or where their also negative role models that you didn’t want to identify with?
“I did not have negative rol models, I don't identify with people with unethical behavior.”


What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strenghts?

“The biggest lesson in life is always follow your own compass, and that wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it and right is right, even if no one is doing it.” We always have to do the right things in our life.”

What was a defining moment in your life, a setback that later turned out to be a great blessing?
“I do not categorized events in my life as good or bad, my life is a journey loaded with experiences so every experience, that manifests itself, I have to deal with it and do the right thing.”

We have always experienced you as a very dynamic and opiniated person? What are your other strengths?
“Humbleness.”

What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now? Is it spiritual or somehting else?

“That I have been an example for them and the community.”

“Find out what your purpose is in this lifetime and dedicate yourself 100% to that purpose, all your needs will be granted to you.”

As the core group of Share2Uplift we love and deeply respect Gilbert Martina, whom is influencing our health sector as Transition Manager and director of CMC, is deeply involved in the future of our refinery and is enabling meditation of our youth at schools. We definitely consider him one of the 250 ethical leaders of our Island, that continuously works at influencing people’s mindsets in our society. We will definitely continue to hear from him in the future.

The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020


As the Share2Uplift movement our goal for 2018 has been to identify 250 ethical leaders (Influencers) to be empowered by 21st century mindsets and are connected and collaborate with one another to create value for the whole of the society. This goal has only been partially met. We now want to reach this goal by the end of 2020.
Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:
– Create an inspiring vision of the future;
– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;
– Manage delivery of the vision;
– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.
These criteria are now being polished.

• Integrity;

Inspirational, passionate, talented with a committed heart


We have come to know you as a very dynamic, talented, opinionated person and Influencer in our society since 2018, when we saw you at Hóben Òn musical in June 2018 at Kura di Arte. You were highly recommended by motivational speaker Eldrion Regina. Your name is Æmy Felicia, but you are better know as ÆmyNiaFeliz. Why do you brand yourself with that name? We are just curious about the name and how it came about.
“When I was a child they use to call me “Nena” derived from Nena for “little girl” is spanish and “Nia”. At school they would call me by my family name Felicia, but also Feliz (happy) and after some time it became Nia Feliz. I kind of like the NiaFeliz meaning a happy girl and that also became an affirmation of sorts for me. Meaning, I am a happy person and I am trying to make lots of people happy. So, this sticked with me and became my artistic name.”
 

You have a wonderful voice and your lyrics have an underlying educational message. What also caught my attention was your explicit opinion on sex only in a marriage and your belief in God.
“Basically, as a teenager I made this conscious choice and that was since I was at school. Then when I was almost 17 years old the foundation “ATM” (Apstene Te Matrimonio, advocating not having sex until marriage) approached me to become their spokesperson and aiming to reach our youth with this message. I shared their opinion and I had a tough time. I had to deal with bullying and other challenges, but I had and still have this courage to hold my ground, because I firmly belief that sex should come with the right timing so that It doesn’t become a curse instead of a blessing. I know that it is a natural thing and that abstinence doesn’t guarantee a happy marriage, but I have met so many people that have experienced the disadvantages of having sex before their marriage or prematurely that I still am of this opinion.

One of the other reasons I decided that I should wait until marriage is, because I consider having sex with a partner as a gift not to be taken lightly and therefore it is a precious thing to be shared with my future husband and I also wanted to take good care of my body. There are lots of people that don’t belief in a marriage as an institution because it doesn’t guarantee a happy marriage. But I have reliable reasons to believe in marriage and still am a big advocate of this. And you know when I meet young people that are willing to listen to the arguments pro and con’s, the number of people that side with me grows. But it was tough and still is and I sincerely believe that it has its value to wait with sex till you are married.


“Regarding my belief in God, God is very very important to me. Everybody has faith in something and for me I have come to know God personally and I have a very close relationship with God. We, as human beings, have a tendency to judge other people even though we don’t know them. I am of the opinion, that we shouldn’t judge nobody and we shouldn’t let anyone tell us whom God is, everybody should figure it out for themselves by seeking Him through His given word which is the Bible. Every single day I try to live my life trying not to be as judgemental as I use to be. I am not completely free of judgments, because it is a protection we all have, in order to bring light to our blind sides and peoples true intentions. But I am doing a lot better then when I was much younger and you know I now feel so much better because of this.”

You were born in Curaçao, you have 1 older brother. Your parents are very supportive in your career, right?
“My parents have always been very supportive. But as parents it could be strenuous for them at times. When you stand for positive things like I am and take the road less travelled in the way the world goes around, you will be challenged. So I have people that have other opinions on the things I stand for and that is also a challenge for my parents at times. I am still their daugther and they care for me, so it is a challenge for them also when I go through my struggles . But I am very proud of them. They never gave up on me. They know how the world goes around and how nature works. They know that I am up to something special, that will benefit the majority of people and that by taking the road less travelled, at times I will be challenged, but in the end those whom take the road less travelled will be set free, as the Bible says.”

As an artist, you are trying to inspire youth and send a message to them in a way that resonates with them. In that sense, you are influencing a lot of our youth. When did you start getting interested in becoming an artist?
“Well, at the age of 4 years. I was in the car with my mother one day, when she asked me what I would want to be when I grow up and I gave the most innocent and honest answer that a child can give, that was 'an artist'. You see I recall loving everything that has to do with art from a young age already. As I grew up, it changed of course. But this calling came back and I now feel that this is what I want and need to do. I used to be a teacher and 3 years ago I decided to become a full time artist and motivational speaker. Not an artist because of the fame and glamour, but more in the sense of being 'artistical' because of what art can do and offer.”

What is your big why or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
“I saw a lot of broken people that were suffering in so many ways, basically because of their ignorance. And when you are ignorant your spirit dies in a way. Your living, but you are not alive, because of mental poverty. By being “artistical' I want to address this, so that more people can live a more fulfilled life. I know God put me on this earth to fulfill a purpose. We all are like weapons and God gave us all talents we can use it to either destroy or build up. As I became aware of my talent, I came to understand that with music, a vision, words and actions I can influence lots of people. So, I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to become an artist.”

You are a full-time artist and how do you deal with this responsibility?
“Well, one day, one step at the time and at times one hour at the time and at times to tell you the truth, it is overwhelming. At times, I am puzzled on how to handle challenges, but then at the end of the day looking back, and it’s done, you feel happy because of the progress made.”

Where does your artistic drive comes from?
“It comes from my core in which God instilled a combination of reason, a responsibility for the wellbeing of the human race and the need to create, some of my God-given abilities were also inherited from my parents and my uncle on my father’s side. I am very aware of how much power we have as human beings, especially when we are effective with our talents. When we are effective, we are a weapon and a source that can help and uplift others. And in this world where we have billions of people all of us have something that everybody needs.”

How big a role does Faith in God plays in who you are right now?
“God’s role in my life is everything. God is the reason that I am whom I am right now. If I didn’t have faith in God and believed solely in Him, I wouldn’t be able to do the things that I do right now or be the person that I am today.”

Apart from singing, are there other ways and means that you try to share your message to greater public/ audiences?
“Yes, I am a motivational speaker and I am pretty good in creating things. I do everything that has to do with visual art, I am a painter and of late I am role modelling a healthy life style through my social media outlets. This latter part was originally not my intention, but as I was sharing with my followers me going to gym #aemygymlife and exercising, people started to like this and felt inspired and also started going to the gym. Some said that they would start this year 2019.”


What is the secret of this success up to now?

“My faith in God and God within me. It makes me do things that are for the good of all, makes me love my fellow human beings and makes me persevere, which is not always easy.”|

You are trying also to keep up with your skills?
“Yes, I am trying to work on different areas, like my singing, piano, playing the bass, the gym, knowledge, wisdom, my spirituality, read from the Bible yes basically different areas and also keep working and practicing on the things that I like to do and come easy to me at first. I like reading books, I love to watch educational YouTube’s and basically everything that adds to my knowledge. One of the things that I have worked on that didn’t come easy to me was, that I am basically a very shy and introvert person. I came to realize, that this was a big disadvantage to me, because people perceived me as being arrogant or antisocial which in reality when you get to know me it is totally the opposite, and this made it difficult for me to connect with other people to promote my talents, just because I was an extremely shy person. So to invest in networks with different people didn’t always come easy to me. That might sound strange because the moment I am on stage, I am totally in the moment and all my shyness falls away because of my stage presence. But I have worked on this, slowly but steadily, just by confronting and overcoming this shyness step by step and this made me changed 180 degrees overtime from where I use to be, to where I am know.”

What are your other strengths?
“My main strengths are perseverance, stamina and my ability to go the extra mile; I am good at visualizations; I have the power to convince and I like helping others to become their better versions of themselves for example when I was at school I used to help fellow students who were about to fail to perform better so that they could pass their exams.”

We believe that you have another strength also, you have “a lot of charisma.”
“Well if you say I have... ” (Æmy blushes)

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about apart from singing?
“I like painting, I like to design clothing, do graphics, I like playing the piano and the bass guitar, I love writing songs and making music. I love to watch and analyze movies. I love reading, I love dancing choreography and in December was the first time, I am 30 years old, that I have danced with someone (couple-dancing) at a house party in front of people I don’t know, it was the first time for me in that setting, so it is never too late to learn new things or do something new.”

If you as Æmy would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“Hi I am Æmy, I am an artist in music and arts, I am an entrepreneur and I love people.”

How would you describe Æmy in one word or one sentence?
“Well, people say that I am inspirational and talented so I’ll add that to the sentence. I am inspirational, passionate, talented with a committed heart.”

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
“In music, it’s Juan Luis Guerra since I was very young, I love His music and ways. I also have an African Musician that I have followed since I was a kid but he no longer lives. My parents, they have inspired me with their unique talents in all areas particularly to deal with different kinds of people in and with love.

Martin Luther King & Nelson Mandela and Tula. I admire them because in spite of their suffering they stayed pure. It might sound like a cliché, but it is hard to fight for a cause and be resisted strongly and still, in spite of all the resistance, persevere. But also my great-great-mother (our 5th generation) whom survived her first husband whom died and then was married again and again lost her 2nd husband and still manage to someway somehow raised her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and never gave up. When she passed away at age 96, it wasn’t because of any illnesses; she had been through so much but still lived a healthy life and died peacefully. It was just that she was ready to go home, by then leaving the family comfortable behind. She was a really wise and strong woman. Btw, there were not always positive role models, but even with negative role models, you can look to find their positives and learn from that.”


What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strengths?
“Not everyone comes to you because they love or care about you or want to help you get further or grow, some come for the wrong reasons. And you should be aware of that.”


What was a defining moment in your life, a setback that later turned out to be a great blessing?

“First of all, three years ago, I decided to become a full-time artist. By doing just that, I lost my financial security, so no guaranteed income per month, no pension for my old age. I chose for the unknown where nothing is certain. Some thought that I was out of my mind, but I took this leap of faith and just did it. And once you do it, the fear factor lessened.

A second defining moment was related to something I expressed in the song: 'Dolor no ta dura pa semper'. It reflected a period in my life that the pain was so intense that It affected me physically. What it was exactly, I am not there yet to share this, but this turned out to be a blessing for me. Because the song came out of that pain I’ve experienced. And this song resonates with lots of people. You can’t stop from going through suffering, but you can decide how long you will suffer, because that is a choice and it isn’t easy btw, but it is still an option you can choose for.”


Where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now with your business(es)?

“I would be established, with a solid foundation, it would be rolling and productive and all my initiatives are doing great and would have won international recognition and be an established brand. I would have grown in different areas of my life. I firmly belief in that thoughts create our reality and that there is only one thing that can stop us and that is God himself not a single human being at the other hand can stop us.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and othersto say about you let’s say 30 years from now?
“I love Æmy for what she has meant for us. The feelings and emotions would be so overwhelming when they try to express themselves, they would not be able to do that because words would not be able to express them. I would also say, just bless God for have known me, because it He who deserves the credit for me being who I am.”

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao
"Because of people like you and me, we keep fighting for the positives in Curaçao. We have people that really care about people, there might be only a few now, but I have faith that it will grow. By doing everything they can to be selfless to make Curaçao great for the next generations to come. This is what makes me optimistic about the future of Curaçao.”

Do you want to share anything else that might be relevant for those reading this blog?
“We should remember and take this to heart and apply it the best way you can:
It is all about love and what you did with true love. Everything is love. How you treated and loved others, how you loved yourself in order to share love with others. There will be no darkness or evil when there is love, so disseminate love in others.

To finalize this blog the transition of SEHOS to Curaçao Medical Center asked you this year to make an inspirational song for the transition. That I consider a 3rd party endorsement and recognition of your talent and your positive messages, right?
“Yes, people saw my talent and they believed in the positive person and messages that I sing. I belief in unity, I belief in collaboration based on each person’s unique strengths. We need to respect every person’s strong points. We can then help each other. To get a message to reach far we need other persons and it is not about “me” shining, but “the message” shining and if we are all humble with our strengths, that will serve all of us well.”

Darrel Hoek: dynamic and inspiring

Darrel we have come to know you as a very dynamic, inspiring, ethical person and Influencer in our society since 2015. As the CEO/owner of KlikoLimpi you have been evolving as an entrepreneur for some years now. Could you share some personal facts of you and your family?
“I was born in Curaçao, I have one daugther and I now live happily with Dulcine, my significant other. My mother who is a former administrative worker and civil servant, always had a side business while, she held a fulltime job. She sold cloths, towels, underwear and did also catering. When she did her sales and collected payments at the end of the month, at times we joint her in her car, while she was driving around. So in that sense, I had a role model. She has always been and still is very supportive. She triggered me: “To be honest with myself and with others”. I still appreciate this very much.”

When did you decided to become an entrepreneur?
"
Well this dates back since I was very young. I was always saving money. The savings I used to buy books to sell and at first I wasn’t very successful in my sales abilities. Nobody wanted to buy my books, no cousins, no neighbors, no one. They used to tease me, by calling me a “salesman, selling Insurances”. When I was in Holland for my studies I used to buy clothes at a whole sale outlet and sold these, just like I saw my mother do as I was growing up. During those days the business was impressive, you know and I had a real appartment and not a simple studentroom, so I needed to earn the money to afford this appartment and I was succesful in doing that. In 1995 I came back to Curaçao after I received a very attractive job offer. As an entrepreneur over the years I have slowly, but surely honed my entrepreneurial skills going through what they would call the School of Hard Knocks — or University of Hard Knocks. Meaning the (sometimes painful) education one gets from life's usually negative experiences, often contrasted with formal education.”

When did you start with KlikoLimpi?
“I got this business idea via a friend, Ton Marten from Bonitha Blokhutten on the 16th of August 2006 and it became operational on the first of April 2011. It took me 4 years of preparation, to get started.

Basically I am very grateful for Ton to keep on insisting, after my initial scepticism. First of all it was totally out of my original HRM-background and I didn’t want to import business ideas that worked in Holland “one on one” in the Curaçao environment. But then I decided to look at this with an open mind and...... the rest is history.”

Have you ever worked for a boss?
“Yeaah. In Holland I had worked different jobs as a student and started my career after my study as a HRM-professional. I was very happy with this job. In Curaçao after I came back also, but not for very long. The organizational culture didn’t fit my urge to feel free. The culture basicaly was limiting me to grow. I had and still have this inexplicable urge to learn and grow. So I quit this this job and embarked as a consultant for a company in Barbados, Trinidad and finally Suriname.”

Where does your entrepreneurial drive come from?
“I think it is a calling and It had to manifest itself someway or the other. When I quit my job to become a consultant I was young and unprepared. I was a qualified HR-expert, but being an entrerpreneur was something totally different. In fact, I went totally broke twice. The last time I went broke I was in Suriname as an entrepreneur. Because of scarcity and as someone not born nor raised in Suriname, eager to earn money to survive, I saw opportunities where others, living there, didn’t noticeut that was also a big learning moment for me.

I discovered that I am a survivor. I can fall, but I will always rise again. When I started KlikoLimpi I experienced also a lot of problems, but this time I kept believing in myself and I was convinced that one day we would turn the tables and get back on course and even expand this business and create other spin-off businesses. As we speak, 2019 will be a break out year. I have other business ideas that are now still in the incubators phase. Some will become operational very soon this year.”


What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
“I always wanted, in hindsight, to create my own playground with the things I initiate and by doing just that, serve other people. Like yesterday I climbed back on one of the trucks of KlikoLimpi and worked and this feeling of doing this whenever I feel like...call it freedom that is what I really cheerish.”

What kind of services does KlikoLimpi offers?
“We wash kliko’s of companies and households.”

How many employees do you have employed now?
"After hiring 43 different employees, I am very proud to say that we have 5 employees at work at KlikoLimpi of which 2 are full-timers."

What is the secret of this success up to now?
“Loyalty, I can best describe our organizational culture as “a group of ants”. We work like “ants” and help each other like “ants” too. We have had our challenges, but these workers stayed loyal to the company.

This year end, we gave them an increased bonus compared with the year before. They had on average only one day of sickness leave, over the whole year.

You know when you and I met each other in 2015, at that time I had broken my left hand while continue working on my truck as I was learning the skill how to attract the right kind of employees for KlikoLimpi. So I have come from very far. We also have very loyal customers as we have gone through different challenges. “Loyalty” is our most important company value.”

What are you doing to keep up with your knowledge and skills?
“I like reading books, watching you tubes, follow courses, I invest in networks and people that might help me further with my business(es). I am a people’s person and connect easily and that is why I love meeting different kinds of people and I have a vast network. I am a good story teller, I inspire others, connect with people to get on board of my ventures, where needed.”

Why is this so important for you?
It gives me so much inpiration and new ideas. By doing this I learn a lot and grow in different areas that I am interested in. But, creating new jobs for others also give me so much satifaction.

What are your other strengths?
“I have this ability to take an idea, I pick up and translate this in a very practical way and make it work by applying this. This is based on the University of Hard Knocks experiences.

I am able to live with less, I don’t mind not having fancy stuff. I can and have sacrified the short term benefits to reach my goals. This is one of the strategies I used, to overcome the issues with KlikoLimpi. You know this year we are going on vacation after a very long time.

Another strength I learned after my bankcruptcy in Suriname, I came back to Curaçao and I rebounded as an entrepreneur. I started selling marinades, fish and shrimps while preparing KlikoLimpi. I still had an enormous curiosity and I belief that is the key to my ability to bounce back. I am always finding a way to make it happen.

I am also a people’s manager and I connect easily, creating over time an increasing local and international network and this has created a “goodwill factor” that has and still is serving me well. I am very grateful for this.”

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about?
“I love doing sports (crossfit, biking and diving) and I work consciously on my overall life balance, which includes regular meditation. I love reading books. When I was a child, I use to read a lot. Like my parents had a subscription to National Geographic and had an Encyclopedia collection. So I ended up spending more time reading these books, because I preferred that over being teased by other children because I was stuttering. Because of this reading habit I could fantasize a lot and this kept me going and kept me focused on achieving the goals/projects that I set my mind on to achieve. In due time, I developed the skill to turn a dream into an actionplan and now also take the necessary action steps to make it work. I could reason very well and although my environment was not directly supportive, because we have no extensive family entrepreneurial tradition, through all my experiences and curiosity I kept my essence pure and developed a skill to set boundaries regarding whom I work with and whom not. I am very good at this now.”


If you as Darrel, would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“An adventurer, I also create a future for others and myself. I have big dreams, but at the same time I can stand with both my feet on the ground.”


How would you describe Darrel in one word or one sentence?
Inspiration, inspired by others and inspiring others.

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
“I had and still have different mentors. Once I discovered how important mentorship could be for me, it taught me that I am not alone. There are people that belief in you and whom are willing to guide you;

- My mother of course, as she modelled entrepreneurship;
- Inspiring leaders I come to know from books;
- Other business leaders and I have also learned from negative role models btw.

What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strenghts?
“My decision to come to Curaçao from Holland. If I would have to do it again, I would decide to stay in Holland for my flourishing career, I would have probably become an entrepreneur at a much later stage. I would have prepared myself much better then the way I decided now to become an entrepreneur. I would have looked for a senior entrepreneur to mentor me and develop an ability to be more careful in the partnerships that I decided to work with.

Another defining moment was the moment I couldn’t find work as a consultant due to lack of network etc etc. It later turned out to be a blessing, because Ton insisted that I should explore the idea of KlikoLimpi. I am very grateful for this.

This year I will launch some other businesses that are spin-offs from KlikoLimpi, that will create additional employment opportunities. I can’t go into too much details yet, but we are on track to make this year 2019 our break out year, with new businesses.”

Where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now with your business(es)?
“I would, based on a balanced life, then have moved away from operational tasks and to become a person more involved in managing some businesses, but also helping and inspiring others - based on my experiences and contacts - with setting up and developing their businesses from scratch.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years years from now?
 “He did it his way”. Don’t forget that I became an entrepreneur against the tide of most people in my direct environment discouraging me and telling me to stay away from the unknown and to avoid taking risks.”

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao?
“I firmly belief that Curaçao has lots of opportunities and different opportunities than the usual suspects. But to create value out of these opportunites requires a different mindset. Look for other opportunities far different then we are accustomed to look at. We need to be flexible with ourselves. I have come from far, from being HRM-consultant to a director of KlikoLimpi, right? You have to be willing to take 8 steps back before you can move forward. You need to have a supportive direct circle of influence surrounding you like Dulcine, my significant other is very supportive in what I am doing. You have to have a curious mind, I invest a lot in upgrading my skills and knowledge in areas of my interest. You have to get over your fears and self imposed mental boundaries. I once forced myself to learn scuba diving inspite of my initial fears, because I thought that one day this might become helpful in one of the business ideas that I am exploring.


Do you want to share anything else that might be relevant for those reading this blog?
"Yes, I would recommend starting entrepreneurs to:

- Stick to the dreams that you have, if it feels like the right thing to do;
- Look for people with relevant information and knowledge to mentor you;
- Invest in learning the skills and knowledge needed to forward your goals. I have become an expert in areas that were initially totally different from my areas of expertise, but now I am an expert;

2019 will be my break out year, after working year in year out on my dreams. It is like building a pyramide, layer after layer. At times having my doubts, but then as I am very good in fantasizing or after reading a book, this inspires me to pick myself up again and stay in the course.

KlikoLimpi is and has been a social and employment project. But I build and honed my entrepreneuerial skills doing this and this is now benefiting me to create other businesses that will also create new employment opportunities. My plans will also generate and/or save foreign exchange and I also have regional international ambitions."

As the core group of Share2Uplift we love and deeply respect Darrel Hoek whom as an entrepreneur has been growing, consolidating and expanding. We definitely consider him one of the 250 ethical leaders of our Island, that continuously works at value and jobs in our society. 2019 will be his break-out year and we will definitely hear more from him soon.


The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2020
As the Share2Uplift movement our goal for 2018 has been to identify 250 ethical leaders (Influencers) to be empowered by 21st century mindsets and are connected and collaborate with one another to create value for the whole of the society. This goal has only been partially met. We now want to reach this goal by the end of 2020.

Look at the list of the Influencers we have interviewed or reported on, up to now.


As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;
– Manage delivery of the vision;
– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

These criteria are now being polished.

Roxana Croes: Caring and Inspiring

We have come to know you as a very low profiled dynamic, ethical person and Influencer in our society. As the CEO of LDI (Leadership Development Innovation) you have been offering Leadership Management International modules on leadership for quite some years now. Can you share with us some details on your family and how you started as an entrepreneur?
“I was born in Costa Rica and raised in Curaçao. I finished VWO at Radulphus and completed three years of law at the university (UNA) and then quit studying law. I have one brother and I am happily married to Stanley Croes.”


You are an entrepreneur that have during the years slowly, but surely mastered your skills and gained insight in the market to become an organization, that successfully offers leadership development programs to an increasing number of attendees, from all walks of life and business sectors. You have inspired many to become a better version of themselves and continue to personally grow and hone the leadership skills of many. I am one of those you inspired. We met in 2011 as I started following LMI-modules and got so carried away with Leadership development that I followed 6 modules for the next few years. Basically, since 2011 I have been one of your mentees and you keep triggering me and inspiring me. In 2014, I had the opportunity to experience LMI’s world conference for that year in an inspiring setting in Kauai – Hawaii. I joined you as the winner of LMI’s ‘Client of the Year’ award. During that conference, I committed to dedicate myself to Leadership development on Curaçao for the rest of my life and started the Share2Uplift movement in 2015. 
Where does this come from? What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
“It is an inner calling to positively impact the lives of others. It began many years before I even started with my current business. It makes me happy and fulfilled when others discover that they have in themselves all they need to be happy and successful.”

During all these years that you have been associated to LMI in their yearly events with associates from all over the world either in their regional conference or world conference you have consistently won numerous awards for growing your business in this small sized market.

That is no small feat. When did you start offering LMI courses in Curaçao?
“I heard for the first time about LMI in 1998, I saw an ad in the newspaper which immediately got my attention. I worked for a short period of time for the LMI licensee and in 1999 began offering SMI personal development programs. I did this for approximately 3 years. In 2006 I became an LMI licensee.”

When did you get interested in becoming an entrepreneur?
“I worked with three family members; my mom, my brother and my husband, who owned their own businesses therefore I got some “training” in becoming an entrepreneur even before I considered becoming one. I also did freelance and volunteer work for several years, organizing and supporting organizations and events.”

When did you start with LDI?
“January 2006.”

Have you ever worked for a boss?
“Yes, however for short periods of time, after I finished school. I like the freedom and the challenges of having my own business.”

What kind of services does your company offer?
“We offer LMI (Leadership Management International) programs. The LMI programs were developed in the early sixties by the late Mr. Paul J. Meyer, who held the firm belief that all people, regardless of their gender, personality, social standing or level of education, could develop the necessary characteristics to achieve and live a lifetime of success. The programs are offered in small groups over the course of several months to allow participants to bring about changes in their behaviors and attitudes and to achieve their personal and professional goals. My work is to assist participants go through a process of self-discovery. Recently we have also been offering a workshop on Emotional Intelligence.”

How many employees do you have employed?
“4.”

What is the secret of this success?
“Self-knowledge: Since I was a young adult I have been interested in better understanding myself, others and life in general and I have continued to pursue this interest.

- Perseverance: I do not give up on myself or others. It may take a few days or a few years, but I do not easily give up.
- Courage: (to be outside my comfort zone) I used to be insecure, shy and reserved and my work consist now in working with many people.
- Continuous Growth: I continue growing by attending personal development programs, reading and listening to inspiring materials on a regular basis. I also meet weekly with my Master Licensee, and I have a group of LMI peers (the Master Mind & the Right Stuff group) with whom I meet weekly. I am always learning. I ask many many many questions. I focus on my strengths and I acknowledge my weaknesses.
- Mentors: I have several mentors that I have been meeting with for many years. It has helped me tremendously because they challenge me and help me to see things from a different perspective. A Great Team: I am fortunate to have a group of committed people who are eager to do a good job.”

You are trying also to keep up with your skills and you enable others to grow. You like reading books and you love meeting different kinds of people. Why is this so important for you?
“The more I know, the more I know how much I do not know. I enjoy growing and empowering others to do the same. I know how much it has transformed my life.”

What are your other strengths?
“I am becoming more conscious of my inner dialogue (self-talk) and “I am doing a better job in managing this inner dialogue and my emotions. I am continuously making the effort to pause and reflect. I realize that things don’t always are the way they seem to be. I am learning how to be kind with myself and others when mistakes are made and at the same time challenge myself and others to do a better job.”

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about?
“For many years I have been interested in preventive/natural medicine (for mental, emotional and physical health) It has served me well in my own life and I also like to share this with others. I have also been practicing meditation for many years. Understanding my mind has been a lifelong interest and pursuit.”

If you as Roxana would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“I tend to be reserved and would not easily share a lot about myself with a stranger, unless he or she would be interested in the things I am passionate about. Then we can have a very long conversation… “

How would you describe Roxana in one word or one sentence?
“Someone who wants to live a life well lived and who wants to share with others what she discovers so that they can find more happiness and success and love life even more.”

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career?
“My mother, my husband and LMI founder, Paul J. Myer.”

Were they always positive role models or were they also negative role models that you didn’t want to identify with?
“All human beings have both positive and not so positive traits. There is always room for improvement.”

What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strengths? Or what was a defining moment in your life, a setback that later turned out to be a great blessing?
“When my husband and I lost all we had (stability, income, business, home) and we had to reinvent ourselves. During these challenging years, I learned to trust life, trust others and myself, because no matter how big the challenges, there was always a way out. Without the challenges I would not have personal experiences that now help me to relate to people going through similar challenges. It is also because of the challenging times that I once again considered LMI as a business venture and rediscovered my talents and strengths.”

Where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now?
“In 5 to 10 years I want to have an organization with an inspired team of associates who will continue to positively impact many lives for many years to come.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years from now?
“She inspired me to live a happy and meaningful life.”

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao?
“The people. We have many talented, creative people doing a lot of good work. I have the great good fortune of meeting many of these people in my work.”

“It is important that we each continue to make a consistent effort to grow as human beings so that together we can have a positive impact on those around us, especially the younger generations. Every little effort that we do, to be the best version of ourselves will help our community and the world at large. Each of us can be the change we want to see in the world.”

Extra interview: Influencer Elgenia Pieternella and book list 2018 Master Your Mind-platform sessions

In this week (24th – 31st of December) we will present to you as a bonus, our second and therefore our extra interview we had with Elgenia Pieternella chairperson of Fundashon Negoshi Pikiña. Further: a list of all the books we presented this year in our Master Your Mind-platform session. Elgenia Pieternella: talented, modest, honest with a big heart for the community


Elgenia Pieternella is born in Curaçao, and is very fond of her family. She studied at the UNA (now UoC), has a Masters in Economy at the university of Maastricht and a few years back also got a Law degree at UoC. She worked at ABN-AMRO bank and MeesPierson Bank before becoming a policy advisor at the Ministry of Finance. In addition, she was involved in local organizations like ABVO, ACU, Toastmasters and youth groups as advisor or a leader. In the Netherlands, she contributed to organizations like GroenLinks, Unicef, Environmental Economist and to different youth groups. She is now a board member of the Foundation Johannes Bosco and is very connected through different networks in our community. Elgenia is also the chairperson of 'Fundashon Negoshi Pikiña', a foundation aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial education among our youth/students. 

Elgenia, when did you start getting interested in enabling entrepreneurship?
“I think I discovered it, when I was around 16 years old and I needed money to buy a Christmas gift for a young guy, who was in our youth group. We had a program and everyone drew someone else name to offer them a gift. It needed to cost no more then be around Naf 10,= . I think, if I can recall correctly, I got Naf 5,= from my parents. At that time, they couldn’t afford more. I needed to double that amount and fast. After giving it much thought and reflection, I invested the money in clothing pins and made two products to sell to some 'wealthy tourists' staying in the house of a neighbor. My selling skills were so bad, I ended up giving them the product as a gift. There is where my parents stepped in and took money out of their grocery/month savings account and gave me money to buy the gift. But, that experience was the turning point in my life, because it taught me that I needed to educate myself to become more skilled, so to never end up like that anymore.

So, I started reading the Financial Times, the Economist and Caribbean Newspapers like the Guardian, but also the Bible as part of the youth group of which I was part of. By the way the newspapers and magazines were “used leftovers” from the ALM flights. My father, who was working at the airline at that time, took this home for us to read. Via these papers and magazines, I once saw an advertisement from International Pen-friends (A kind of Facebook at that time) and I became their representative in Curaçao.

Everytime someone became a member through me, I got a commission of $3 or $5. That was awesome.
In a week, I sometimes made $30 dollar. That’s how I learned to become a real entrepreneur at the age of 17. Afterwards I created our first family business called “Rodeko” (derived from Robeco in Rotterdam. I saw the name on a building when vacationing). With this additional stream of income, my family became more self-sufficient and we could do and buy things we needed and help others.”. This additional source of income replaced the salary of my parents when at a certain moment in time the monthly income from business was around Naf25.000,=. More business followed from Rodeko and when the 3 of us went to study in the Netherlands (Erasmus and University of Maastricht) we set up a business to cover our costs. “Dimasy” was created for this purpose by me and my brother Ethsel. Some of the highlights of this “student company”. One of our products made it to the inside of a Mazda car at the European Head Office of this company. The “conservator” of Boymans van Beuningen museum, one of the largest museums in The Netherlands, surprised us one day by calling us up and requested a demonstration of our product. Our business partners were companies from Italy, Taiwan and United States.


This interesting and challenging period in our lives made us realize that had we had “entrepreneurship/financial education” in school, it would have prepared us much much better. How to be an entrepreneur, we learned the hard way, with ups and downs, by teaching ourselves and learning by doing…..alone.

Going through this experience, we decided we will set up an organization in Curaçao that would inspire and teach children and the youth to become entrepreneurs, since through this you will receive essential life skills. These acquired knowledge base skills via entrepreneurship is, we believe, important to reduce poverty and for a person to have (additional/passive) streams of income. But most important, they did not have to learn it the hard way as our family did.

In the end we did it, we survived and I am now an investor and also advisor to some of our family business endeavors.”


What kind of programs have you rolled out as the Fundashon Negoshi Pikiña over the years? Which one of the programs has been the most successful?
We have done the following programs:
• Company Program;
• Our Community;
• Festival di Lamunchi (together with a local Bank);
• Economics of staying in school;
• Roefeldag (together with the organizer FAJ and Desaroyo i Progresso)
• Global Entrepreneurship Week;
• Youth Biz Startup;

We got the most publicity via 'Festival di Lamunchi' and we mobilized the most students and schools via the project 'Our Community'. In 2017 directly via training and the lessons we taught 2.332 students from over 30 schools in Curaçao from the primary school level till the University of Curaçao. This year we reached over 2000 students again. The exact numbers are now being collected. Over 25.000 students have been reached and inspired by our programs in these last 10 years. The coming years this will be doubled in less than 5 years. The programs have been exported to Bonaire and in 2019 we will reach out to Aruba and Sint Maarten.


Does the foundation has employees employed?
“Yes, for 0.75 FTE, two working 30 hours overall a week.”

How many volunteers are helping you achieve the goals of the foundation?
“Approximately 25 volunteers a year.”


With which international and local organizations does the foundation work with?|
“Internationally we work with Junior Achievement and Global Entrepreneurship Week.
Locally we collaborate with the Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Economic Affairs.”


How important are these link with the international organizations which you work with?
“These links are very important. We get expertise, we have access to their network and it gives exposure for ourselves and also for Curaçao.”

Can you give me some examples and what this collaboration entails?
“We consider it to be very important to be locally based and locally focused first and have a significant impact as a foundation and then use this foundation and these experiences, to export ideas and knowledge to, for example Bonaire. Branching out to Aruba and Sint Maarten to get also economies of scale for the translations we have to invest in, is also important to us.


The Government is important, as it will cover our basic and initial costs, that the private sector is not willing to sponsor. All our programs are offered free of charge to our attendees, so we need the Government to facilitate “financial and economic”- education to our people. This starts in school. Most schools, parents and students can’t pay or are not inclined to pay for these type of programs, since they don’t have the resources or don’t (yet) see the benefits to be gained out of these programs.”

You have just been involved actively in the Global Entrepreneurs week in November? What is the intention of this week and how has it developed itself over the years?
"We promote the Global Entrepreneurship Week in Curaçao and Bonaire. 2018 was our 4th consecutive year. Changing mindsets is an uphill and long term “battle”. We believe that an increasing number of people, especially young people are starting to see entrepreneurship as a career option. This is being confirmed by the Chamber of Commerce. We are still aiming to:
• increase the interest of our youth and others to start a business:
• scale their business up and
• even aim for export as an explicit goal, that can be accomplished by more of our local entrepreneurs (Yu di Korsou) either together with others locally or non-locals or on themselves.”


How is the youth reacting on the services that you offer in the schools?
“We work and approach schools. So, schools are seeing and recognizing the benefits of entrepreneurship education in their schools and are welcoming our experienced based programs. In the beginning, we had to approach schools. Now they are approaching us. So, the momentum is definitely changing.”

How many youth do you belief you have touched over the years? Can you mention some of the best examples of youth whom have followed your courses and started as entrepreneur with success and they still are successful?
“I think there are several. Look at a few examples on the picture below.”



You are of the opinion, that you can master your own destiny and should not wait things to fall in your lap. By deciding to be like this, it also means working long hours at times. Where did this drive come from?
“I suppose, it is within me, but I belief that my upbringing has inspired me to think that a lot is possible and that you need to learn new things and meet new people all the time, to keep up with this rapid changing world. During my whole life, others have helped/assisted me (opened doors for me) on my path. Sometimes, I recognized that they were there to help me and I welcomed them, but sometimes I didn’t even noticed them and couldn’t see what their purpose was in my life. So, I too have made mistakes and I try again again to learn from them and strive not to repeat my mistakes. But then again, that is easier said than done. I am NOT perfect, I am human.

Having a belief system and basic core principles will help you make better choices in life. That is also easily said, but difficult to apply. Although sometimes painful, people and experiences combined with my belief system have shaped me and make me who I am today. I liked to thank all that had deliberately or unconsciously contributed to this.”


You are trying also to keep up with your skills and you enable others to grow. In that sense, you attend conferences regularly. You can connect with people and you can connect dots and align as part of a deliberate effort. You like to meet different kinds of people. Why is this so important for you?
“I try to attend conferences 2 or 3 times a year, this depends on the funding of the attendance to these conferences. If I visit a conference three times a year, usually one conference is paid by the organizers; one by Fundashon Negoshi Pikiña and one I cover the costs myself. They are important because you learn new ideas and skills, but also for the networking and the sharing of experiences with others.”

You have very good people’s skills. Where does this interest come from?
“I don’t know if I am good with managing people. Seeing the results reached I suppose I do motivate and inspire people. I am starting to realize and recognize that I am a very creative and talented person. I do see possibilities where others only see problems and waste.
But going back to managing people, actually, I am a very shy person. If I need to connect with people I will, to reach my goals and be useful to them. So, this drives me to go beyond my fears and do what has to be done in a positive way. It isn’t easy, but I keep trying.”

What are your other strengths?
The biggest strengths that I have is, that I try to be honest and real. That is what others tell me they see in me and appreciate. In addition to that, when I am passionate about something, I will go for it and sometimes loosing myself and the sight of my family in doing this completely. I need to put more attention to this. Since it can become a liability or weakness.”

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about?
"Of course. I love being in nature, l enjoy walking, traveling, reading, coaching and motivating people and being in a creative environment with like-minded people.”

If you as Elgenia would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“I was never asked this question before, but I think I would answer: I am a world citizen living in Curaçao, trying to change the community and the world from there. Here is my email/app if you want to contribute, from where you are or where you are going, here is the information you need. Many many thanks.”

How would you describe Elgenia in one word or one sentence?
“A very talented, modest and honest person with a big heart for the community.”

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career? Where they always positive role models or where their also negative role models that you didn’t want to identify with?
“There have been a few including my family especially my mother. But one of the first I can remember , outside the family circle is a woman I met at my first “vakantiejob”. We were 3 or more “vakantiejobbers”. And they needed to choose someone to do a difficult job and since I was modest and a little shy in those days, everyone else thought that the ones with the more outgoing personality could do the job. She told them all, she wanted me and not the others because she believed I am the one that could do the job. I did more than what she expected from me, immensely grateful for the confidence she had in me that helped me in all the future “jobs” I had since then!!!”

What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strengths?
“Resilience and creativity and I gain lots of strength from my spirituality and family.”


What was a defining moment in your life, a setback that later turned out to be a great blessing?
“I guess that is “Not selling a product” I thought was the best product I had at that moment!”


What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now? Is it spiritual or something else?
"First of all, I believe in God and in creation. I think all of us have been created with a purpose and we should leave a (positive) footprint behind in this world. You have to look or search for it, we are more than just animals and plants. We have a mind and a consciousness. We have the freedom to choose our path in life;

Secondly, family is also important since they teach you the first “steps” in life and make the first decisions for you. My BIG WHY is: “Will I get enough time or do I live enough to accomplish my mission”. The motivation for me is “so much blessings have been given to me and my family, so it is my obligation to give back.” I have chosen the path of changing the mindsets of young people and their environments, so that the community as a whole will be a better place to live in. So my BIG mission in life is, to invest in and inspire the youth to change our community using all the talents and years they have been blessed with. The real challenge is to convince them to believe in themselves and that they can be a change agent and change themselves and our community and the world at large.”

I want to be alive and healthy and still be contributing to change things that are important to me. For the next generations, I would say: “Look at the upside of live and make it better.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 25 years from now?
“Great inspiration, we will follow in your footsteps and leave a legacy behind for others to continue to create ripples.”


What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao?
"
We have a talented population with a lot of hidden treasures among them, many of us are just looking at the wrong place to discover our talents. The younger generations (sustained and inspired by the experienced older generation), will lead the way, if those of us with experience will honor them with our confidence and hand over to them the torch to our future. Remember the young are part of us, our production. If they do not make it (happen) it is in part our responsibility.
So, I am optimistic looking at the future and I am able to contribute, because we know how to connect with our youth. I want to playfully teach them, that when they look in the mirror, they will see their real value.”

Do you want to share anything else that might be relevant for those reading this blog?
"I would like to speak directly to all those reading this blog, to stand up and do their part to make this a better place, a better world to live in for you, your family and our community. You are your brother’s keeper as part of our society and of the world. All of us, have the power in us to change (part) of this big world. We can do this by inspiring ourselves and others. We just have to start, get up, stand up and start doing what we need to do. We were created with dedication and talents, it would be a pity to waste it and not to use it. ”

Influencer Daniel Corsen, committed, driven & passionate

We have come to know Daniel as a very dynamic, ethical person and Influencer in our society.
He was born in Curaçao and he has one sister” Iliene Corsen” and he is very fond of his parents. Daniel has a Bachelors degree in International Business at the UNA (now UoC) and he has a masters degree Financial Management from Erasmus University/ UNA.

Daniel you are the director of D & I Business Support Services, a company that you and your sister Iliene started. Is that correct?
“Well, in the beginning we were not planning to start a company. I was working as a lobbyist for a company called Caribbean Water Association (CWA) in Brussels, Belgium were the headquarters are of the European Union and the funds are available for Water Management projects. I was trying to identify possible Water Management projects in the Caribbean that could be of interest for CWA and an association of watercompanies. But, I got bored of this job and came back to Curaçao and after 6 months of orientation I was hired to do some work for a company, but I didn’t have a company as a legal entity. To get paid for my services rendered to this company, I asked my sister to start our own company D & I Business Support Services and she would become the director and I would become the shareholder, creating an entity so that I could get paid a salary for the services I offered to this company. Then a myriad of syncronistic events happened, that pulled me in the direction of looking for work via D & I, after the company that triggered me in the first place to start a company, stopped with its activities. Back in Curaçao, I didn’t wanted to study full time again (I started with a Masters in Finance at UNA-Erasmus), so this pulled me in the direction to become a serious entrepreneur and look for customers for D & I. In 2010 we started the company and in 2012 we actively started to look for clients, interested in the development of people and their organizations.”

What did this interest in people and organizational development come from?

“My parents were in Scouting and we grew up in Scouting. Through Scouting I developed a people’s development background and a mindset to develop myself so that I can be able to help others. There are lots of training possibilities being offered in Scouting dedicated to leadership development. But this was not a straight forward matter. Just when I was planning to leave scouting in 2003 /2004, my parents whom were also very involved in Scouting Internationally, convinced me to attend an International Jamboree in Thailand in 2004. That, was a defining moment for me. I was part of a group of 34 other youth participating in this Jamboree. In Thailand it became clear to me, that Scouting had so much more to offer, than I was accustomed to getting in Curaçao. So this triggered my new focus, I started to focus on achieving more youth involvement in Curaçao. I started a Scouting network of youth, aimed at getting our youth involved also in the decisionmaking processes in Scouting. This process has not been easy by the way, we experienced lots of setbacks doing this. Nowadays, a significant portion of the board of the Scouting consists of youth younger then 30, which is something unique for our region. So to answer your question, via Scouting I became interested in people’s and organizational development.”

Have you ever worked for a boss?
“Yes, when I was a policy advisor responsible to develop sports projects at the ministery of Education before 2010 and as I mentioned I also worked as a lobbyist in Brussels, although I was free to do what I considered best when I was a lobbyist.”

My first company btw, my sister and myself started when I was 15 years old. Inspired by “Fundashon Negoshi Pikina” we started our first company, a video production company and we made video produtions. That was fun. Now as D & I Business Support Services we are a “Strategic Consultancy and Design firm, guiding organizations in their transformation.”

How many employees do you have employed?
We have 11 employees working with us, two of them are free-lancers.


How do you keep up with your skills and enable others to grow?

“I have always practiced the principle of learning by doing. This is the best way to learn. I read a lot and as we advice on leadership and management, I needed to go through these experiences myself to have enough knowhow I gained through action learning in D & I, to share this with potential clients.”

Did you had any role models?
“Not really, since we were children my sister and I, we were playing entrepreneur. We still have pictures of those days where she use to be the secretary and I would be the director. So we sold coco nuts to our neighbors for example. So we were very serious in our role of playing to be an entrepreneur. But I have learned and still learn, from different people.”

What are your strengths?
“I read a lot and always aim to empower people. In that sense I am a people’s manager and a servant leader. I am an abled communicator, I can connect with people and I like meeting different kinds of people.”

Of late you became president of the Inter-american Scouting Association, a regional association of scouting, what was your drive to accept this responsibility?
“Scouting Antiano has been an associate member of the International Scouting Association since 1997. And the board of Scouting Antiano always aimed at becoming a full member. This opportunity appeared only after 2010, when Curaçao became an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2016 we finally became a full member with full voting rights, after aiming to achieve this at full force after 2010. I was in the Inter-american Association since 2012 as vice -president. You know, I postulated myself this year to become president and I didn’t consider my chances of becoming the president very high. Well it appeared, that destiny and others had other plans for me. I was fully aware of the time this would take to do it right, because I needed to combine this work with my responsibilities in D & I, where last year we opened an office in Aruba. Then something remarkable happened. My colleagues in D & I told me to ”go for it” after I was getting signs, that I would make a chance to become the next president. They told me that the prove of the cake of empowerment is, to really allow others to step up in D & I and assume more responsibilities, if I would be elected. Even though I wasn’t convinced that I could stand a chance, don’t forget we are a small island and we also have countries like the USA in this organization, I was elected against all of my own odds.”

When would you consider you tenure as the president of this association in scouting a success?
“I firmly belief in Scouting and what it significance could be, to make this world a better place to live. I have learned a lot from Scouting and as long as I live, I will be giving back. Curaçao is a very small countyr, but we can still make a big difference. The advantages of being small are, we speak different languages and know different cultures. We have a Dutch education, while we live in this multi cultural region. We have a track record of people from Curaçao doing a great job in Scouting Internationally, like my sister Iliene was in charge of Streams Youth Program consisting of fulltime staffers from Scouting and volunteers, she did a great job.
We have Serulia Damasco whom is also from Curaçao that has also done an excellent job. Think of the size of this project 130 staffers and volunteers merged together and working in different Task Forces on the strategic plan of this international organization. Others have taken notice of our skills and educational back grounds. So we are highly regarded.”

Do you have other hobbies or interests that you are passionate about?
“I love music and I played “Quarta” for many years, not much of late, because of my other responsibilities. I love travelling, I meditate, love swimming and enjoy relaxing.”

If you as Daniel would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
“I work on “organizational development” area, that is my passion. I am involved in Scouting and I am a business owner. Well, I normally don’t mention that last part, but someone I met recently told me, that I should be mentioning this, so “I am also a business owner”.

How would you describe Daniel in one word or one sentence?
“Committed, driven passion.”

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your career? Where they always positive role models or where their also negative role models that you didn’t want to identify with?
“Well, I have been influenced by different people. Especially my colleagues. Their individual growth is a source of inspiration for me. Negative role models, ....well I see lots of leaders in our society that I experience closely, that I don’t want to emulate. They don’t consider human development as important as I do. They see things coming and still they don’t act and still they depreciate the importance of the human factor. I firmly belief, that if we invest in people they will grow.”

What are some of the challenges, lessons learned, that you have encountered in your life when you ultimately discovered your talents and strenghts ? Or what was a defining moment in your life, a setback that later turned out to be a great blessing?
“My defining moment came in 2013/2014 when I had a burn out. This made me stand still and reflect. I had an uncontrolled drive. It made me start meditating and exercise more consistently. Your body has limitations. I learnd the hard way, that I have to set priorities and you can’t achieve everything you want all at once. So this was a defining moment for me and a blessing. So now I am able to see it more easily when others fall into this trap. But then again, when people are like that they aren’t good listeners. But I try to be empathic towards them.”

We have always experienced you as a very dynamic and opiniated person? You influence a lot of people while you have worked in a variety of postions of responsibility. Like being the chariman of the youth council in Curaçao. What are your other strengths?
“I have excellent people skills, like the ability to give feedback, be empathic, I am a relationship builder, I have a great ability to adapt, I am a strategist where I can break things up fast in smaller bits and bytes and then translate that into actions and go for it.”

What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
“It is spiritual and simple: Becoming the best version of myself, this is the reason I came to this world. I also want other people to become like that and discover their best versions of themselves.

I was on a trip from Curaçao to Panama or Columbia and I read the book “Solve for Happiness” by Mo Gatwat. This book had a big impact on me, because it really hit me, because life is all about expectations and the management of these expectations and nature by itself means that nothing is permanent. I was working very hard and people were warning me about, working too hard. And I didn’t listen. Until my body protested. This book made me much more aware of my judgements and the tendency for stereo typing. In my spiritual journey, as I was raised Roman Catholic, I was more able to answer questions where the Roman Catholic church wasn’t giving me all the answers. So this was my BIG AHA-moment. I read this book twice. The moment I read it again, I got new insights and looked at things from different perspectives. That is why I at times, I read books more then once.”

Where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now?
“That I will still be doing the same, like:
• Being involved still in Scouting, serving in which ever capacity;
• Be involved and caring with regards to my family;
• In business, that D & I has grown and expanded beyong the Dutch Carribean with our client base.

In Scouting, we have a strategic plan and the vision is that by 2023 Scouting would have grown and become the leading youth movement educating and developing over100 million actively in their development. For Curaçao this would boil down to a growth from 1700 members now to over 3000 by 2023.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others say about you, let’s say 40 years years from now?
“That I made a difference in their life’s and added value to them as a person.”

What makes you stay optimisitc about the future of Curaçao?
“Nothing is permanent, even when things are not going well, it will not stay like that for ever. We are a developing country not a developed country. I see growth in that we are supposed to experienced some things as part of opur growth. I am seeing how our governance institutions especially our judicial system is being tested and is functioning, as different prominent persons in our country are being in trial or have been sentenced in our courts. This makes me optimistic about our future.”

Influencer Boudino de Jongh; Introducing Online Book Session and this week tips

Boudino de Jong, dreamer, entrepreneurial and innovative

“I was born in Curaçao and I don’t have other brothers or sisters. I am the stepfather of a 3 and 4 years old, my partner is expecting our first child within soon. My parents are still alive and I care a lot for them. I studied in Holland in Groningen at the Rijks Universiteit Groningen (2007 – 2016), but because of my innate curiosity I also worked during that time. I also spend 6 months in Barcelona. I didn’t not exclusively dedicate all my time in my formal studies. I have a Bachelor Interational Business in Holland and a Masters degree in Strategic Innovation Management.

I have always been kind of restless, call it drive and passion in my personal journey. I was always into exploring. I have always worked and earned some money on the side and I was always doing things, that I really enjoyed and liked. I had started our businesses in Curaçao, I had finalized my thesis and still had one exam to finish my studies. But, I was pretty sure of what I wanted to do. You know at times that’s a problem because as focused as I can be, the moment you are involved in more businesses at the same time that could become a challenge. But in hindsight we have a pretty good success rate, because in the end it is all about the execution. I want to experience so many things at the same time....”

Have you always loved entrepreneurship?
“Yes, since I was kid I used to collect shells and sold them to tourists. I have always been a dreamer and I wanted everything, but when the dreams become plans with a deadline, they are not a dream anymore. That has never stopped over the years. My dreams have kept developing themselves and once I achieved them, I developed new ones. I always told myself: “Keep my wishes coming, keep on dreaming and keep striving for either commercial or non-commercial dreams.”

What are the companies you are involved in?
With my business partner Gino Jacobs, we are involved in Skempi. It is an online music streaming platform for independent music, it started in the Caribbean, but now also entails international music.

Profound projects. It is a digital agency, that is focused on digital innovation to facilitate digital transformation of companies;

And of late, this year Skenicash. It is a customer loyalty program based on digital raffles every month and differs from a point redemption program where you collect points through your purchases. All these companies are innovative.


What is your last big dream?
“One example of my continued dreaming is the big transition we are in right now from being a local market based group of companies, into companies that are mostly global oriented. Let’s be clear on this, the local market in Curaçao which included people from Curaçao living in Holland, has helped us come as far as we are right now, so we are deeply appreciative of that. But since 1,5 year we are transforming into a more internationally oriented company. I belief that we have our destiny in our own hands, but there are certain things outside of our control. Let us say, you can be as entrepreneurial as you can possibly be, but if your market is Venezuela and the economy implodes that will still not work for you. So because of the small scale of the local market and the vulnerability of some international markets, we are forced to put our eggs in more baskets. It gives us more assurance and growth possibilities. So, our dreams and ambitions are international simply because of the diseconomies of scale. A small market has its limitations and that is why we didn’t want to stay depended solely on the local market. This triggers us to stay innovative and keep re-inventing ourselves.”


What is your opinion on the entrepreneurship on Curaçao?
You know, the number of entrepreneurs we have in Curaçao is shockingly little. We hired some flex office spaces for a while at Scharloo and we could take notice how small the number of local entrepreneuers were that we met, while the expectations were that this place would be sold out in a blink of the eye. That didn’t happen. I belief that our educational system plays a role in this and most of our family households, with the best intentions of parents for their children, don’t stimulate their children to become entrepreneurs. The ideal career for very long was and still is, to let the next generation become great professionals. Furthermore there are not so many role models available and the government in Curaçao, doesn’t facilitate and stimulate enough local entrepreneurship, although we can clearly see small improvements from the government side.”

 

Are you optimistic about the future of Curaçao?
“We need to anticipate more the coming disruptive changes in the world. We on Curaçao will not be excluded from these changes, like the rise of crypto currencies as an example. These changes will come and are unstoppable. We need the same kind of innovative spirit when Mr. Smeets developed the Off-shore and Trust financial sector in the past, that was the single most innovative product developed in the past decades in Curaçao. We need to develop an innovative product, I belief we can, if we start teaching our children program codes for examples. Program codes is a language just like papiamento. Teach them these new tools instead of stifle their entrepreneurial spirit as I belief the existing educational system does, too much. Why not create a Sillicon Valley type of sector. Just like Pietermaai has become a creative neighborhood, why not develop a creative industry comparable with the creative sector in Pietermaai. Why not be a front runner in introducing electric infrastructure and electric cars? Why not use our braintrust that are successfull internationally as role models and advisors to prove to our upcoming generations what is possible. Why not attract digital nomads that align their efforts within our education system? I belief that we should start small. I belief that a lot is possible.”


What is your biggest take away up to now in being an entrepreneur?

“We have become more experienced in our entrepreneurial skills. It was action learning, but anyways this resulted in making us more able to roll out new ideas on the market in a much smaller time span, Skenicash for example.

We also continue to learn by looking at what our local and international competitors are doing. I read a lot of books and read online, but I am focusing on the subject matter that I need to know more off. So I am very selective and that serves me well. I never read novels for example.”

Whom were you role models?
“Well I didn’t learn it from my mother or father. I liked what a distant family was doing, but most of all I read books that inspires me. And as I am the average of the 5 persons I meet the most, those 5 persons in my circle of influence, push me out of my comfort zone and there is where I learn the most.”

What are your strengths?
• “I am very empathic towards colleagues and other people. I am a people’s person. If I don’t manage this well it drains me;
• I am very visual, this is of great help when we are involved in innovation. I can see so clearly in my mind’s eye and finally
• I don’t mind working very hard.”

What was a defining moment in your life?
“My big defining moments were twofold:
The first one, was the moment I decided to become an entrepreneur. That was in february 2012 in my student attic in Groningen Holland. I was having this inner self talk with myself. It was clear to me, that I wanted to become an entrepreneur and start something for myself, the issue was when. I was finalzing my Bachelor degree. So one line of thinking in my self talk was, dedicate the next 1,5 years fully to finish my masters degree, find a great job to put my Bachelors and Masters degrees work for me, have a family and kids, buy a house with a mortgage and when I would turn 45 years old, start my own business. I would have more mental peace and then take the leap forward into the unknown. But then, suddenly it hit me. I am only 24 years old I said to myself and if I would have to wait, till I would have turned 45 years old ...that would be a long time from now (then 2012) ...and then I thought, it is never a good moment, so I concluded the sooner the better and I started immediately to take some steps and started my own company and started telling everybody that I did just that. In hindsight, I have no regrets whatsoever, contrary to that, it has not been easy. It has been the opposite of having a smooth ride, it was sacrifice after sacrifice. But by just getting started, that feeling gave me such a great sense of accomplishment.

The second defining moment was, the moment I decided to collaborate with Gino Jacobs, my business partner. First we started with Skempi and then we started with Profound projects and after that we started growing exponentially. But that moment in time was my other defining moment. I had to let go of another company that I had started, to be able to collaborate in this partnership. And as Frank Sinatra sings: “I did it my way, I do what I like and I have no regrets”. This is better than regrets afterwards on missed opportunities, for sure.”

What is your BIG WHY? Where does your drive come from?
Well to tell you frankly, I don’t really know. I belief there were some big success stories that I read about. I thought, that if they could do it, why can’t we do it? We aim high and we are still trying to reach our never ending stream of new goals and targets. As long as we are having fun doing what we do, as long as we are able to materialize our dreams, I will keep doing this. Einstein once said: “Imagination is the preview of coming attractions.”

And as I told you before, I am a very visual person in my visualizations. I always start with the end in mind and I anticipate all possible solutions visually. Even as detailed as, how would the client react when he receives the email we send to him. That works for me and for us.”

How would you rate your life’s balance?
“Well an “A” for my effort, but in reality a 6 meaning there is room for improvement. I didn’t do enough sports the last two years. I have done some diving, surfing, swimming, free diving and snorkeling and I am planning to pick up jogging again. But there is definitely room for improvement.”

Do you meditate?
“Yes, I meditate. I am aware of the power of meditation and how it releases mental blocks as you become one with the Universe. I have picked it up again recently under the guidance of a meditation teacher and I am increasing the frequency of my meditations. I love the idea of going within oneself. I belief in a higher being and I am humble enough in managing my ego. It is OK to have a high self esteem, but I am humble enough to understand that what I create is not 100 % to be credited to my sole efforts.”


Where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now?
“Be almost completely independent of all my companies from operational tasks, to full time be able to dedicate my focus on high level innovative developments or entering new markets. I would like to own a hedge fund, this is my passion, that successfully invests in high potential start ups.

I would have financial freedom and more time for travel and more time to spend with my family. I am making it my challenge to appreciate the small things. I like being in the now as this is a big challenge for me right now, as I am restless and always thinking about the future, and find it difficult to let go.”

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 40 years years from now?
“That I was always ready to help, that I was a caring father, son, grandson. That I am a goalgetter, I walked my talk, I have a done alot for our society, because as my businesses have grown, I gave back to the society. I belief in giving back to the society and consider this to be a blessing. At this moment, since one year I am a member of the Rotary of Curaçao and we do lots of charity and our companies donates some funds to a foundation aimed at taking care of dogs."

How important is the organizational culture in the three business that you run?
“Culture according to us makes our company unique. Culture is one of most valuable assets. We deliberately cultivate a certain culture in our companies, because as we are going to continue to grow, we would need different mechanism to keep everybody aligned towards our goals and targets. One of the most relevant policies we apply is the development of 6 collective company mantra’s:

1. Have fun;
2. make it happen: We do what we say, we are going to do, in the agreed upon deadlines, while maintaining ownership and accountability;
3. We turn obstacles into opportunities. We have had our share of extremely challenging moments, we aim at embracing and turning a moment of panic, into the greatest opportunity for growth;
4. Eliminate politics. At our meeting all of us are equal and you can bring up anything in our meetings, as long as you can substantiate it, with no back talking and in an open dialogue;
5. The client perception is sacred, this is our strongest marketing strategy, we will do everything possible to keep our clients happy. Our company's reputation is scared;
6. We have high standards and work continuously towards improvement and direct implementation in our drive to be more innovative and more professional.

How many employees are employed by you?

“We have now 12 high end people working as employees for us in Curaçao, we collaborate with developers in India and and we have some freelancers in Holland. All our employees are younger than 30 years old and we recruit those that love to do the work we offer and don’t have a primarily money incentive. We like shaping our new employees to meet our requirements and the younger they are, the better that is possible.”

Like Timothy (as we were doing the interview Timothy passes by), we could personally ask Timothy some questions.

Timothy, why do you work here?
“It is a very unique place to work, you need to be able to:
• manage your stress well because the deadlines are sharp;
• do some quick thinking and
• be solution oriented.”

Timothy was at the UoC doing Civil Engineering and HRM, but loves what he doing now because:
“You are instantly being confronted with challenges, going through new experiences and learning cycles every single day when dealing with new clients and new sectors.”

The goal of the core group of Share2Uplift for 2018
As the Share2Uplift movement our goal for 2018 is to identify 250 ethical leaders (Influencers) to be empowered by 21st century mindsets and are connected and collaborate with one another to create value for the whole of the society.

As Share2Uplift we are fully trying to align with this thinking of Center for Curriculum Redesign to promote this agenda in our educational systems and workplace. So, in that sense we fully support any initiative to make our educational system 21st century proof.

Share2Uplift aligners are those that:
– Create an inspiring vision of the future;
– Motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision;
– Manage delivery of the vision;
– Coach and built a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.
These criteria are now being polished.

Changing the way we present our book summaries
In order to be able to reach more people we have decided to change our formula of how we present book summaries.
We will offer our book summaries as of this month December 2018 only online via this website by the 20th of December. We believe that we will be better able to reach a larger audience with the content we are presenting. This month’s summaries will be “21 lessons of the 21st century”, Yuval Noah Harari to be presented by Michiel van der Veur and “Innercise”, by John Assaraf, to be presented by Ivan Kuster.
